Backup deleted one of my backup files.

Thread needs solution

My hard disk failed, but I had a backup from 4 weeks previous which was made with True image home. I had the backup safe on an external drive. I had to do fresh install of win 7 on a new drive because the acronis rescue media gave a fault. I downloaded acronis 2019 and verified my backup file which was good. I decided to backup the new installation, which completed OK, but in doing so, acronis deleted my original (only) backup. Now I am completely stuffed with no possible way of recovering my system.  Why did it delete my old backup? no warning was given?

Thanks for any advice.

Sandy

Sandy, welcome to these User Forums.

Sorry to hear of your disk failure and need to reinstall Windows on your computer.

The only reason why Acronis would have deleted your original backup file, as far as I am aware, would be because the new backup had exactly the same name as the old one?

The other reason would be if you did a Clone from ATI 2019 to your backup drive where the old backup was held, where the first action of any clone operation is to wipe the target drive.   A Clone is a 1:1 disk copy on one drive to a second drive, whereas a Backup is written to a special container file which can be stored alongside other files on the drive.

Thanks Steve,  It was a different file name and it was a full backup. perhaps by default, the program deletes the previous backup? anyway. I am currently trying to recover the deleted file, but I doubt it will be recoverable. Oh well, the world won't stop turning, but I was a wee bit annoyed for a while :-)

Sandy, I haven't come across this type of behaviour previously here in the forums, or in my own experience, so difficult to know why or how this has happened?
