Thread needs solution

How can I restore a 256 GB SSD backup on a 512 SSD drive?

Have tried in the usual way, my 512 drive shows "greyed out" and cannot use it for recovery.

Suresh, welcome to these User Forums.

It should be possible to restore a backup of your 256GB SSD to your 512GB SSD.

How are you attempting to do this recovery?  Is this from within Windows or are you booting from the Acronis Rescue Media?

How is the 512GB SSD connected to your computer?

If your intention here is to replace the smaller SSD by the larger one, then the recommended method would be as follows:

  1. Run msinfo32 in Windows when booted from the 256GB SSD and note the BIOS mode used by Windows.
  2. Create the Acronis bootable Rescue Media on USB stick (32GB or less in size) or CD/DVD.
  3. Shutdown the computer, remove the 256GB SSD, replace with the 512GB SSD.
  4. Connect your backup drive with the backup from the 256GB SSD then boot from the Acronis Rescue Media using the same BIOS mode as used by Windows.
  5. Recover the backup to the 512GB SSD.
  6. Shutdown, remove the Acronis Rescue Media and backup drive.
  7. Reboot from the recovered 512GB SSD.

Your greyed out drive might be because it is in a RAW or Unallocated space.  Check Windows Disk Management to find out.  If you find such conditions for the drive use Disk Management to create a New Simple Volume on the drive which will make it an Active drive.  That will solve the issue.

Suresh, great to hear, thanks for the feedback.
