Corrupted VSS, system restore, scandisk after latest ATI2019 update

Thread needs solution

Hello all,

Previously I had posted about the inability to do any further backups because of a volume shadow service error, where Acronis would not recognize that my Bitlocker encrypted primary drive was unlocked (of course it was since the Windows OS was running).  At the time, and thanks to everyone for their help, we were unable to determine if Acronis update had done this, or it was related to my antivirus or bitlocker or something in windows updates (since all of those things were in use at the time and I had done several updates that day with Windows, Kaspersky Internet security antivirus, and a disk cleanup in Windows 10 including removing old windows update files.

The symptoms of the problem were not only was I unable to start a backup in Acronis (stated the VSS was not running, although it was), but I was unable to open Windows 10 system restore (it gave an error 0x81000203) and I was also unable to run the scandisk utility (either in windows or in the boot environment prior to windows starting).

Importantly one of the things I did that day was run the Acronis TI2019 updater and download the latest version.

After being unable to restore the system to previously, since this to me signified some very low level Windows system corruption, ultimately I had to clean install everything including Windows 10. (unfortunately I did not have a backup of my system prior to the Acronis update so all my backups were similarly corrupted)

Since then I have been routinely checking the integrity of the VSS, bitlocker, my antivirus, windows system restore and windows scandisk.  Today the only thing I changed on my system was to run the Acronis updater to the latest version of ATI2019.  Prior to the update all of the items worked, after the update and reboot, system restore again was corrupted, unable to scan the disk, unable to use anything that uses the volume shadow service, including unable to start a backup with acronis.  Fortunately I had an image backup from yesterday before I did the update which I was easily able to restore with the survival kit and external hard drive and was running normally as before.

The current version of ATI2019 I have is 23.3.14110 and it was trying to update to the latest.  I am running bitlocker and Kaspersky Internet Security 2019 which are the only "low level" programs of import that may have some kind of interaction.

My question finally, is has anyone experienced this system restore/scandisk corruption after trying to update ATI2019, and has anyone found a way to do the update without corrupting (i.e. should I decrypt the entire drive prior, should I uninstall my antivirus, etc.) None of these things should be necessary to do prior to an update, but if it is a known problem with ATI2019 would appreciate any advice.

Thank you

Sincerely,

Peter

Peter, I personally have not encountered any issues with updating ATI 2019 right from installing the original Beta version back in the summer, to updating to the latest build #14690 earlier today, where all my backups continue to work fine, all using VSS and with System Protection enabled etc.

I also have not seen other reports of such issues being reported here in the forum other than the one from yourself.

Given you have already performed a clean install of Windows 10 on your computer, along with your other applications, I can only recommend opening a Support Ticket with Acronis for this issue, and let Acronis support investigate this in more depth with you.

Thank you Steve, I will post a ticket and see if anyone else came across this issue

Hi Vittorio,

I haven't found a solution yet, but I thought of something you may want to try.  Instead of doing the automatic update process, maybe uninstall the whole program including the "cleaner" that Acronis offers to delete the configuration files, and then reinstall using the newest version.  This may avoid the problem, since it seems to be an issue only when updating - I didn't have a problem when I first installed the program, just after the automatic update.

If you try this out, please let me know if it worked for you by uninstalling the program and then installing the newest version, instead of updating an already installed version.
