How to backup Entire Win 10 Syst to DVD's

Thread needs solution

I usually backup to an external 4 TB hard drive. Now I want to do a backup to DVD's of my Entire PC system (C,D.E & F drives) or separately, so I can perform an Entire system restore, or restore 1 disk at a time. I have never done this before.

Within the "options" menu, I see there are choices for "Removeable Media". Which choices should I select? Then, how would I burn this backup to a dvd?

I use Acronis True Image 2019. can this be done with this software, and how?

Thanks. Andy

Andy, welcome to these public User Forums.

To backup to a DVD drive, you would need to select your DVD drive as the Destination location for your backup task and then feed in DVD's while your backup tasks are running.

To find the DVD drive, you should click on the Destination panel in the main ATI GUI, then on the Browse button and expand your PC listing to show all drives, which should include the DVD drive.

I would recommend that if you go ahead with doing this, that you make separate backup tasks for each different drive you want to backup.

You will also need a stack of DVD media for most modern computers given the size of drives and data involved, plus please be aware that DVD media is not without issues when stored long term as well as being easy to damage via scratching, heat etc.  Writing to DVD may also be slower than doing the same to your 4TB drive due to much reduced data transfer rates.

Personally, I have not used DVD's for storage for many years and given the price of reliable HDD or SSD external media drives, would not consider using optical media for backing up large volumes of important data.

Thanks Steve, for your reply. Yes, it's coincidental that a friend of mine said the same to me last night about how the size of hard drives and data has changed over the last 10-15 years, since I backed up to dvd using Norton Ghost years ago. He said the same as you, about the amount of dvd's needed and it being more un-reliable than just buying more external hard drives for back up. I guess I will abandon this idea of backing up to dvd's since I'm hearing that it's probably not the best path to take. Thanks again! Andy

Good call!  Yeah, grab another cheap external drive or even an "internal" laptop drive and an external sata to usb 3.0 adapter and just make a separate backup to that drive instead of DVD's.

Just checked Amazon and they have a few USB 3.0 x 4Tb external drives for under $100.  Should provide lots of room for backups and will be much easier, faster and more reliable to use than a bunch of DVD's (plus you can use it over and over a lot more safely too) or re-purpose it for something else down the road if need be.
