Migrate to New Computer Exactly the Same Specs and OS

Thread needs solution

Hi, I invested in Acronis to make it easy to 'completely and easily' restore 'everything' when required. Now I fully understand that migrating to new hardware and OS isn't that easy, but in my case I have TWO Dell XPS 15 9570's and both are on (or can be on) exactly the same OS.

Surely there's a way to 'dump' everything (including software and settings) and then come back and tie up a few tiny loose ends with OEM licenses or other software licenses that are tied to the first machine? If not, I'm not really sure what I'm paying for if it's the age old "transfer your files, do everything else yourself" scenario? Excuse my ignorance, but what are these other programs like zinstall doing that Acronis can't?

Would really appreciate it if someone could give me the steps, or advise if this isn't advisable : )

Perhaps I'm just not savvy enough to understand whether this is all that's required, or if this is actually talking about something different. A 'normal' backup isn't sufficient?

And when I read this, the very first lines seem to contradict the heading!?

You can create a disk/partition backup and restore it to a different machine to transfer the entire existing system to new hardware (you may need Acronis True Image Premium or Acronis Universal Restore if you plan to transfer the system to dissimilar hardware).

The position is the same with ATI 2018 and the current version ATI 2019. As the hardware is identical, that removes one potential issue. With Dell PCs Windows activation should not be an issue. However, other programs may have activation issues if you licence only applies to one PC; this will depend on how they check the validity of the installation.

The first thing to do is to create a backup of both systems in their current configuration. While it is possible to do a clone, it may be just as easy to recover the backup for PC 1 on PC 2, thus getting identical configurations. If there are problems when you boot up the "updated" PC, possibly due to third party software licence issues, you can revert to the old configuration by doing a recovery.

Thanks very much Ian,

I think individual program activations will be easy enough to fix.

So I just do a 'standard' backup? No Cloning or Media Building etc. from the Tools menu right?

And that applies to both machines?

It was beginning to look as though such a backup didn't include applications, but I guess it does.

Do you think it would matter if I was moving from Win 10 Pro to Home? Or should I update the new machine to Pro first?

Thanks again!

Si

Turns out that didn't work,  Acronis on the new PC doesn't recognize the backups from the old, so there's nothing that shows up as available to restore.

I guess I should do the Universal Restore. Based on:

Given I'm using very similar hardware and same OS, this should in effect be fine right (and restore apps)? Some caveats as we mentioned above..

There could be activation issues if on PC has Pro and the other Home. It may be that on the xecond machine the activation will be as home; not sure.

Please elaborate on backups not being recognised. Is this using the recovery media or from within windows?

May I suggest you re-post in the ATI 2019 Forum (assuming you are using 2019; if not the appropriate forum for the version you are using.
