Migrating apps image to identical spec hardware

Thread needs solution

My Surface Pro 4 failed (battery swollen and screen damaged) hours after I successfully made an incremental backup of the device.

3 days on, I've acquired a new one from Microsoft to the same spec and it is updated with the most current Win10Pro version of the OS.

1. How can I use the backup to "recover" on to my new Surface Pro4?

2. Can I install this 2019 version of Acronis on my replacement Surface using the existing licence key?

3. Several Apps were single user licensed. Will these also port across successfully and if not, what are my options.

I appreciate there may be some similar questions asked on Google, but I'm wary of the accuracy and prefer to trust this forum, as also, I'm not so technical savvy...

Thanks in advance for suggestions...

Brian, welcome to these public User Forums.

You can move the license for ATI 2019 from your old 'broken' PC to the new one by simply installing it on the new PC and signing in to your Acronis Account then following the prompts to resolve the activation issue.

See KB 61162: Acronis True Image 2019: "You've exceeded the maximum number of activations for this serial number"

For the recovery of your backup from the broken PC, then you would need to do a full disk recovery to the new PC as you cannot just restore programs or applications.

See KB 19296: Acronis products cannot be used to transfer applications to different system or upgrade OS

I would strongly recommend making another new full disk backup of the new PC before taking any recovery action, this will give you the means to get back to your starting point if you need to do so!

See KB 61621: Acronis True Image 2019: How to restore your computer with WinPE-based or WinRE-based media

KB 59877: Acronis True Image: how to distinguish between UEFI and Legacy BIOS boot modes of Acronis Bootable Media

Note: it is important that you boot the rescue media using the correct boot mode as per the above KB document.  For a new Surface PC this should be in UEFI mode!

You will need to check with the vendor / owner of any individually licensed apps as to whether they can be transferred or not / how activation issues are resolved!

Steve,

My sincere thanks for such a comprehensive, concise, and clearly laid out answer and links too. This is an excellence of customer service that is rare and valuable in tips and gotchas to be cognisant about.

Thanks again..
