Restore multiple partitions into empty space adjecent to existing partition?

Thread needs solution

I bought a laptop which came with Windows 10 installed. I did a partition backup of the entire disk, wiped the disk and installed Linux on the drive. The Win10 backup has 5 partitions.

Now I think it might be useful to have Win10 available on the laptop as dual boot.

I can shrink the Linux partition and leave ample empty space to hold Win10.

Is there a straight forward way to "restore" the Win10 backup into the empty space left if I shrink the Linux partition? The machine is set up for UEFI/Secure boot.

Bert, you should be able to restore your Windows 10 partitions to unallocated space cleared on your laptop drive then boot back into your Ubuntu Linux to get Grub2 to pick up the Windows OS and update the boot menu to allow you to choose it on start.

The one issue with dual-booting Linux and Windows, is that any future Windows Update builds will walk all over your Grub boot loader and remove your ability to boot into Ubuntu!
See webpage: RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows

I have the opposite issue on my own laptop in that I use the Windows boot manager to choose between booting into Windows 10 or Ubuntu, and any Ubuntu updates for Grub2 walk over the Windows boot manger, but fortunately I can still boot into Windows using the Grub menu and then reset things using EasyBCD to rebuild the Windows boot manager menu again!

I would recommend making a good backup of your Ubuntu installation before starting on this process.

Thanks for the info and for the warning. Too bad there's no Linux ackup bsoftware as smooth as the Acronis products.

I use ATI run from my Windows OS to backup my Ubuntu partition on the laptop and it does the job just fine, otherwise, I have used the Acronis Rescue Media to boot a dedicated Ubuntu box and do offline backups, plus have a copy of Clonezilla in the tool bag for when needed.
