Are Clone Disk (i.e. bootable) updatable?

Thread needs solution

Hello all

I've never cloned a disk before so wondered if someone can steer me in the correct direction on cloning (or otherwise) please.

I have two identical sized SSD drives and would like to use the second drive to be a bootable copy of the 1st in the case of disaster recovery. I know I can clone the primary (1st) drive to the second but once completed can I update the second drive contents? My theory is - if I delay any update by say by 2 weeks / 1 month I could recover nearly all my programs but not copy over any nasties such as viruses etc. Is this just wishful thinking or can cloned drives be updated without havig to reclone every 2 weeks / 1 month? Or should I just stick with standard partition backups?

Thanks

Graham

Graham, the honest answer here is that a cloned drive image is a one-off duplication of the original drive.  If you use clone again, then that drive is first wiped of all data then the process repeated to duplicate the original drive content.

This is where using Backup tasks is far superior than using cloning as you can make incremental scheduled backups to capture changed data, and if you use a recommended 3-2-1 strategy, you can have a choice of different backup images / recovery points to pick from.

The 3-2-1 approach means looking to have at least 3 backups stored in at least 2 different locations or on different media, with 1 backup held securely offline / off-site away from natural dangers such as fire, flood, theft etc,

One further benefit of using Backup is being able to store multiple backups on a storage drive versus cloning being a 1:1 duplication.  See the links in my signature for more information on the two options.
