Damaged Acronis True Image 2020 backup

Thread needs solution

Hello,

Due to improper handling, the Windows 10 operating system placed on hard disk C cannot be repaired. I was planning to put my only Acronis backup of drive C on another external drive using my laptop and then replace the responsible drive on my desktop pc. Checking the acronis backup (Acronis True Image 2020) tells me that it is degraded. How do I only have this backup?

 Thank you

Jacques, welcome to these public User Forums.

The recommended method of recovering your disk backup for your PC with the damaged OS drive is to identify the correct boot mode used by that PC then boot it using the Acronis rescue media in that same boot mode, then recover the backup to the original OS disk.

The boot mode can be determined by looking at the BIOS boot settings, if it shows the Windows Boot Manager as the default boot option then it is a UEFI BIOS boot system, otherwise it is a Legacy boot system.  You can also check this from within Windows if the OS is able to boot to the desktop by running the command: msinfo32 then look at the BIOS mode setting shown in the right side panel.

The Acronis rescue media can be created using the builder tool within the Acronis application in Windows.  Ideally this should be done on the PC where it is intended to be used but if that PC is not working, then you could create it on another PC such as your laptop.  The media should be created either on the same version of Acronis that was used to create the backup image, or on a later version (not on an earlier version!).

Note: the recovery is best performed on the PC where the disk will be used not on a different PC such as a laptop.
