Deleting copied .tib and .tibx files

Thread solved

In the past I copied (drag 'n dropped) a set of differential backup files (the first Full and the 4 following, created before the next Full) from the internal HDD where they were created to an external HDD, so I could store them offsite. (I hadn't then thought to create the backups on an external HDD directly. Duh!)

1) Will they be of any use now, or might the copying have lost some essential information or connections?

2) How can I get Acronis to recognise them on the external HDD so I can delete them properly, when I need to? At present I can't seem to get Acronis to recognise the backup files on the external HDD.

Advice appreciated - Paul

Paul, .tibx files will work differently from .tib files.

The general rule for .tibx files is that each file will be "linked" to the prior file. And, the 12KB first file must always be left intact.

How have you tried to get it recognized in Acronis? Did you "Add existing backup", or are you trying to open it via Windows Explorer.

If you copy to the external drive the 12KB file and the latest full and differentials, what happens if you try to add existing backup? I would expect it to generate errors, but if you ignore the errors perhaps the backup can be read. I don't know for sure and don't have a setup handy to test.

I've not seen a 12KB file - I assume that's only associated with .tibx?

The old backup files on an external HDD are five .tib (not .tibx) files that I only need to delete, but wanted to do it properly.

Acronis froze the first time I tried to list them as existing backups, using "Add existing backup" (along with the other backups already showing that exist on an internal drive), but on the 2nd attempt it did add the first Full file into the list of backups.

However, when I tried to add the 2nd (much smaller) backup file (working towards all five, so I could delete them properly) the Acronis Backup screen showed the 3rd .tib file in the place of Source file for a backup, rather then the 2nd .tib file appearing in the list of existing backups. Meanwhile, the 1st Full backup had by then disappeared off the list of backups.

As I can do without the old 5 .tib backup files, I think I shall have to simply reformat the external HDD to get rid of the old backups, and next time do the backup for off-site storage directly onto an external HDD.
