Detach back up drive from computer or not?

Thread needs solution

I am currently using A-Backup 2018 and am upgrading to 2020 today. My question concerns security of my .tib back up file on my external hard-drive. After I do a total computer back-up, can I keep it attached to my machine 24/7 to provide automatic incremental backups OR is it best to detach the external drive altogether and only reattach manually when I wish to update the backup? Obviously to me, the detachment is 100% guarded against intrusion by ransom or other malware. I worry that there is still a chance (albeit small) that malware/ransomeware can still reach the back-up if I let it remain on my system or am I mistaken? Comments welcome!

Randy, welcome to these public User Forums.

This is a matter of personal choice about whether to disconnect your external drive or not?

Keeping a backup drive disconnected is absolutely safer than one that is connected unless the drive is not being stored safely and is at risk from other factors such as fire, water, children, pets etc!

Ideally, you should have a 3-2-1 Backup approach for best practise.  3 different backups stored on / in 2 different media / locations, with 1 backup kept offline.

That could be backups stored on a local (second) drive, external drive, NAS and / or in the Cloud.
