Disaster Recovery and old serial number

Thread solved

I recently upgraded my system from WIN 7 to WIN 10. Prior to the upgrade, I purchased and upgrade for TI from Acronis (Cleverbridge). The upgrade preserved my files and, for a couple of days, everything ran OK. Then, something caused WIN 10 on one machine to get hopelessly tangled up. I tried everything I could find to fix the issue but, finally, the only option was to do a WIN 10 reset. The reset did away with all my installed programs. Since I had purchased a backup of the TI upgrade on a flash drive, I reinstalled Acronis TI 2020 successfully until I was asked for serial numbers. I entered the current serial number OK but was th en asked for my 'old' serial number which I found in my Acronis registration (TI 2017) but the registered serial number for TI 2017 was rejected as invalid! I no longer have the WIN 7 system so I can't look for the serial number on the failing system. How do I activate the new TI upgrade?

Jerry, did you register both your versions of ATI (serial numbers) to your Acronis Account?  If so, try signing in with that account in the ATI 2020 application.

Otherwise, please send a private message to Ekaterina Surkova | Forum Moderator who can check your license status and try to help you resolve this issue.

I did, in fact, register both versions at Acronis. I have a whole set of serials registered to my acronis account going all the way back to acronis 2011.

On the activation page, it's a little ambiguous as to what 'old serial' number refers to. I suppose it is possible that one of the periodic upgrades to acronis 2017 changed the serial number to something that is not registered. I can't look for the number in my previous version as it is in the WIN 7 software that I no longer have access to as I couldn't revoke WIN 10 due to the 10 day allowed period.

So, should I contact Ekaterina?

Jerry, if you can see all your serial numbers, then make sure you are picking one for a previous full version rather than an upgrade edition.

See KB 62972: Acronis True Image 2020: How to activate license - which has a section dealing with this type of activation of an upgrade version.

The list of registered serials includes ONLY ONE for Acronis 2017. I do not recall whether or not there was a registerable update to 2017 during my license period nor do I find any evidence of such an upgrade in the registration file.

The situation here is that I have a valid serial number for a paid version of Acronis 2017 and, in my opinion, the serial number for the version from which I upgrades should be sufficient to allow activation..\

All of the versions I have had were PAID versions and NOT free ones. It seems to me that Acronis is mishandling the upgrade.

Jerry, time to contact Ekaterina as I doubt there is much else we can do here.

Hello Jerry,

checked your account - all registered products are there, just scroll down the page. To activate the software you need either a full license key or an upgrade key + full key of an older version.  In your case you can use the key from Acronis True Image 2014 Standard and older. To see the edition of a license, click on the PC icon

and under Edition you'll see the type of the key.

Should there be any issues, please let me know and I'll send you the list of registered keys in a private message.

Thank you - I'll give it a try.

The basic problem is that I upgraded from Acronis TI 2017 shortly before I moved to Win 10. Then, unexpectedly, the upgraded WIN 10 system went completely awry.  I tried numerous methods to recreate the WIN 7 system but all failed. Finally, I did a Win 10 reset which did get Win 10 running again but, in the process, got rid of all my installed applications.

I did reinstall TI okay but haven't been able to activate it presumably because my WIN 10 system doesn not contain the old 2017 TI software.

By the way, I am a bit confused as to why I should use the 2014 TI key as I have a full list of all the keys for all the versions. During the first time I tried to activate TI, the 2017 key was rejected as invalid for the 'old' key.

Kind of seems to me that, as Ihave the flash drive with all the 2020 software (whih I separately purchased), It should be easy to activate the product, To buy the flash drive I had to prove that this was an upgrade.

I suspect the ATI 2017 key was an upgrade key and cannot be used when installing ATI 2020 as it is not a "full key".

That seemed to do the trick. The logic behind this labyrinth is beyond me though.

Anyway, thanks for your help. Acronis TI is, even now, running.

By the way, I pressed the 'Mark as Solution' button here but it marked your solution as 'Didn't Help'!

I've never used it, but I believe the "Didn't Help" is now a command button which can be used by someone else to indicate that what you saw as a solution did not work for them. Seems OK.

Yes, the key from Acronis True Image 2017 was an Upgrade key. Since the upgrade licenses are sold at a discounted price, we need to check that there is a full priced license as a base to activate the product.
