Does Acronis True Image 2020 provide "full system image backup" for Windows 10 Home/Pop!_OS (Linux)?

Thread solved

Hi. Will Acronis True Image 2020 provide "full system image backup" for Windows 10 home and Pop!_OS dual-booting on standard PC hardware?

I tried the trial version of Acronis True Image 2020. It seemed to work just fine, but I don't need to restore yet (or perhaps ever, if things go well).

I have a recently-purchased system with an i9, ample RAM, a 1TB SSD, and a 4TB HDD. I have a plain install of Windows 10 home (kept updated regularly). After that install, I installed a Linux variant, Pop!_OS, onto partitions on the SSD. The HDD holds games (Steam, which doesn't really need to be backed up) and most of my user data.

Thank you for your attention to this question.

Gordon, welcome to these public User Forums.

ATI 2020 has full support to backup Linux EXT2/3/4 file systems used by most distributions when the backup is performed from within Windows or else when the computer is booted from the Acronis Rescue Media on USB or optical media.

From looking at the information for Pop!_OS one of the statements given is that the file system will be encrypted by default on install, which may cause issues for ATI in creating a backup of the Linux partitions.  This will depend on how the encrypted Linux partition is presented to the ATI application, i.e. whether it is still recognisable as say an EXT4 partition, or whether it looks like unallocated disk space due to the encryption?

I would expect that most backup programs would also have difficulty if encountering encrypted partitions unless the backup can be made from the Linux OS after the encryption is unlocked.

With regards to recovery, then again this should not be an issue (with a caveat) if the backup image is being recovered back to the same disk drive it was captured from.

The caveat is that ATI may use sector-by-sector mode to backup the encrypted Linux partition(s) which will result in a much larger backup image and thus any recovery would fail if attempting to recover to a smaller target drive.
