Failed to back up file or folder 'file'. It may be blocked by another application.

Thread needs solution

I'm unable to run a backup as I keep getting this error. If I don't baby sit the backup and keep hitting retry it fails. This pretty much makes Acronis useless.

Hello Francisco.

Welcome to the forum!

To address this issue, you can try the following steps:

  1. Close any open applications: Before initiating the backup, ensure that you have closed any programs or applications that might be accessing the file you want to back up. This includes programs running in the background or system tray.

  2. Make sure the A.virus isn't blocking the process: https://kb.acronis.com/content/36429

  3. Check for file locks: Use the "Resource Monitor" tool or a third-party utility to check if any other process or application has locked the file. If you find any locks, you can either close the responsible application or process or wait until it releases the file. Then, retry the backup.

  4. Restart your computer: A simple restart can sometimes resolve issues with locked files. Restart your computer and attempt the backup again once the system has fully rebooted.

Thanks in advance!

Francisco, for this backup task, go to the Options configuration, select Advanced and expand the Error Handling section. There should be an option to not show messages and dialogs (silent mode). See if setting this allows the backup to continue on.

BrunoC - that option is only available for local (disk) backup. It is not offered for Acronis Cloud backups unless I missed something. Any suggestions for ignoring errors for cloud backups?

I support a few Acronis customers and this is a reoccurring problem. I need to check their backups frequently to see if they get stuck on. Once stuck the backup will not restart until I manually select ignore all.

Failed to back up file or folder. ......  t may be blocked by another application.
