How to get every 30 days a full backup file and else only small backup files?
Hello,
I was very happy with TrueImage the last years and always used "Incremental Backup" to get 1 full backup file every 30 days and the other 29 days only small incremental backup files. Older backups was deleted after 21 days from TrueImage.
How can I get that behavior in TI 2020? I need one file per day (instead of one large file) because of that reason:
My backup target is on my Synology NAS and that target is replicated over VPN (only 20 Mbit/s upload) to another Synology NAS. A full backup is around 350 GB and will take over 1 day to be replicated to the other site.
So currently the replication is not finished, before TrueImage starts the daily backup again and modifies the one and only backup file. Then the replication never finished, because the file was modified during replication and begins again and again.
That's the reason why I am looking for a backup scheme to get 1 big file every 30 days and else only small files with incremental or differental changes. Is that possible in TI 2020 or will I ahve to downgrade to TI 2019?

Switching to a Differential Method will accomplish your goal.

Jürgen, maybe you should submit a Feedback explaining your situation to Acronis. This is the first example I've heard of where the new scheme for incremental backups will simply not work. (There have been many complaints - including one from me - but I don't recall a situation that simply cannot work.)
Acronis won't reply to your Feedback, and there won't be any short term solution - this is a design flaw, not a bug - but it may result in an eventual improvement.

Steve Smith wrote:Your options for the scenario you have described are as follows:
- Switch from creating to making Differential files which do create separate files still but which will progressively grow in size over the period of a month as each new differential contains all changes since the initial full backup was created for the chain.
or
- See forum topic: How to create a Disk backup as .tib (not .tibx) which will create a new backup task using the older .tib format in the Windows ATI 2020 GUI.
Thank you so much Steve! I think option 2 will work best for me. The disadvantage of option 1 is the daily growing file size (until full backup every 30 days).
But as long as option 1 will work, it is perfect - IF the restore will also work everytime without problems!?

@Steve Smith: Should your workaround also work with "Backup full PC" or only with "Disks & Partitions"?

The workaround should work with any backup that creates a .tibx file by default regardless of it being 'Entire PC' or selecting Disks & Partitions.
Personally I would recommend against using Entire PC is you have multiple disk drives in your computer. It is a whole lot easier to recover backups of single drives than having to work with backups that contain multiple drives. File sizes alone will be smaller and the process easier to deal with.

Thanks for the explanation Steve. I have only 1 NVMe SSD in my PC, so it doesn't matter if I still use "Entire PC", correct?

No, not if there will only be the one SSD installed.

@Steve Smith: Do you know if maybe deleting of old versions does not work, if one is using your workaround to get .tib files instead of .tibx in True Image 2020?
Do you know if Acronis is planning something to make the old format available again?
I am now syncing my daily backup file (currently default .tibx format) to Google Drive by Synology Cloud Sync automatically, but the upload never gets finished, because the ~350GB changes every 24 hours and in this time my 20 Mbit upload can't finish the upload and so it has to restart from it's beginning every day for nothing.

Automatic cleanup works just fine both .tib and .tibx type backup files.
There are no plans from Acronis to make .tib files available as a choice for users as far as I understand.
The work-around to force .tib files to be used (via changes to the .tib.tis script file) is still working with both ATI 2020 and in the beta for ATI 2021 (just tested the latter).
