Validation not working

Thread solved

After recent contact with this forum and the help / advice received I now have Differential backup working well. Previous to the help it was taking over 24 hours now it is minutes. The key was to understand the effect of Validation. I have now set the Validation to take place once a week on Sunday night (instead of after every backup) but when I check on Monday morning the status is "queued" and validation has not happened.

More help needed please!

Frazer, if your validation task is showing as queued, then this would suggest that something else is already active or scheduled ahead of the validation action?

If there are no obvious tasks showing in the main ATI GUI, then it is possible that there is a phantom task in the works!  Download the Acronis Scheduler Manager tool (link below) and run this as Administrator, which will open a black, command prompt type window.  In this window, type the command task zap which will remove all scheduled actions.

After doing the above, reset the schedules for any backup and validation tasks.  Note for validation, you will need to open the Advanced settings for the task and then reschedule the weekly task again for the next Sunday.

Thanks for this suggestion - I will give it a try. Nothing else seems to be running and Task Managers shows minimal activity but the queue just sits there doing nothing. If there was an overlap (I am pretty sure there isn't) of an incomplete backup task would not the validation start as soon as the "blocking task" finished?

Frazer,

You say that validation is set to run overnight on Sundays.  Where are the backup files stored?  If these are on an external drive or NAS device it is possible that the device is sleeping and not ready so ATI is has the task queued waiting for the device to awake.

Files are on external drives which never sleep even when the main PC does. Also preferences are set to wake the PC if it has gone to sleep. When I wake the computer on a Monday morning why doesn't the validation start then?

Also Acronis say that if an action is interrupted it will start when the computer becomes available which clearly is not happening.

There may be a problem with Windows wake timers setting in the Power Options for the external drives.  Also, some drives firmware now controls power state.  You might want to do some research in this area.

Will the validation run if you trigger it manually?  If yes then the task is working but some other condition is halting it in a queued state.  Hard to say what that condition is.

The suggestion by Steve Smith seems to have sorted the problem. Thank for the help.
