Hello!

Since I installed Acronis 2021 (standard) this morning, externally connected hard drives or USB sticks can no longer be disconnected from the PC using the undocking function. Since this issue was not present before the installation, I'am assuming that it should be related to Acronis 2021. The same phenomenon occurs with my notebook. Windows 10Pro 64 bit is installed on both.

Does somebody has any idea?

Bernanos, welcome to these public User Forums.

I have seen a number of users reporting the same issue with ATI 2021 preventing removable drives from being removed safely, and I include myself in that number too.

I can only assume that the new Acronis CyberProtect feature is locking the removable drive in some way as I had no such issues with the same drives on the same system with ATI 2020.

I would recommend all users seeing this problem to both send Feedback to Acronis about it and also to open a Support Case to document the issue!  I will do the same myself!

Steve kann bestätigen
Ohne 2021 wird USB durch Erweiterung ausgeworfen. Active protection is deactivatedW10 2004 Build  19041. 450

I have not reported this specific issue myself but would hope that others may have done so.

Further update:

For me, I can safely remove USB key / stick type media without issue.  It is only USB external HDD drives that cannot be safely removed!

On my system I found that I could use the Windows Explorer Eject menu command for the drive and it would disconnect it fine.

After doing further testing, the issue here (for me) is that I can eject removable type USB media fine but my USB 3 external HDD drive (2TB size) is considered to be a Mass Storage Device and it is this that cannot be safely ejected!  One further point here is that the HDD has 2 partitions as is used as a 'Survival Kit' type drive, so there is no Eject option in Explorer for either of the drive letters allocated to these partitions!

What I have further found is that if the drive is set offline using either Disk Management, diskpart or a PowerShell script, then it can be ejected!

In diskpart, the commands would be:

diskpart
list disk
(to identify the correct drive), i.e. 2 for my USB HDD drive
select disk 2
offline disk
(online disk  to set back online)

In PowerShell, this can be done using:

get-disk | where BusType -eq USB | Set-Disk –IsOffline $True

then use:

get-disk | where BusType -eq USB | ft -AutoSize

to see the results of the action.
Note: change $True to $False to put the disk back online again.  It will still be considered as being offline after reconnecting!

The 2 GB partition where the Survival Kit creates on the USB hard drive prevents it from being ejected / undocked in Windows.
On my system times.

I have the problem that only some USB sticks cannot be undocked via "Safely Remove Hardware". The WD Elements 25A3 hard drive and the Samsung SSD T5 can always be undocked.
After I deactivated the individual programs in autostart with Autoruns and checked the behavior of the undocking, I can say that the problem is due to the program ngscan "NG Antimalware Driver".
By the way: undocking in Windows 10 is no longer necessary, but should still work.
I hope that Acronis will fix this in the next version.

According to support, I should contact the hardware manufacturer and you cannot help me. Without 2021(30480) I won't have any problems.
I am now letting the subscription expire.

Please see the comment in the topic here which suggests to me that they have identified or localised this issue!

Drive locking issue looks to be resolved in ATI 2021 #32010 build released today!

I have checked it, in my case the problem seems not to be solved with the new version 32010. I have decativated the service "ngscan" again.

Peter, this worked once for me after updating to 32010 but checking again today after seeing your post and it isn't working now unless deselecting the ngscan.sys driver in Autoruns!

Many thanks for the feedback. Still working? The developers have to go over this again. Many thanks for the feedback. The developers have to go over this again. The german forum also discusses the problem with the new version 32010, but in a confusing way. I have given them the link to the english forum.

Hello Everyone,

we've found a new issue TI-211384 "This device is currently in use" message appears when trying to eject USB-disk after creation of Acronis Survival Kit, however the fix is only planned for the next major version.
