Backups to cloud are being paused randomly

Thread needs solution

I have 2 local and 2 cloud backups scheduled to run daily.  One or the other of the cloud backups will randomly end with "The backup has been paused."  I certainly didn't pause it.  These cloud backups are to the Germany data center.  Once this happens, the scheduled backup doesn't occur anymore.  Recently when I just decided to check on things, discovered the off-site backup hadn't been done in over a week!

Any ideas on what might be causing this?  I hate having to check every morning to see if the backups occured.  And I'm finding that most of the time, one or the other has "paused" and with no warning given.  This seems to be relatively new behavior.

I have Acronis True Image 2021, Build 39216

I did a quick review of my activity listing and do not see anything like that. I am using the Au1 server.

Have you checked the log files for any hints of what is going on. @Steve Smith has put together instructions on how to get to the log files, reporoduced below:

There is a new MVP Assistant log viewer tool that has now been made available by Acronis via the Community Tools page..

If you have Disks & Partitions backups created on ATI 2020 or later using .tibx files, then look in the Backup Worker logs.

If you have Files & Folders backups using .tib files (or Disk backups from earlier versions using .tib files) then look in the Demon logs.

Other logs are shown by the MVP Assistant under the 'Active Logs' heading of the Log Viewer page of the Assistant.

The log files should be zipped to preserve their original file names if sharing in the forums and would need to be less than 3MB in size, otherwise you would need to share the zip file via a Cloud share service such as OneDrive, Dropbox etc.

The only other suggest I have is to try a repair installation which can fix all sorts of odd things (see here).

Thanks, Ian!  I couldn't find anything obvious in a quick inspection of the logs.  I've done the repair installation as you suggested, and last night, at least, the backups proceeded without pausing.  I'll give it a few days to see if the problem seems to be resolved.

I should also point out that normally I'm running through a VPN.  I've done manual backups while the VPN is up with no problem, and no apparent reduction in speed either, so I didn't think that was likely to be related.  But if you've heard of other instances of issues with VPNs, that might be interesting.

Jim, I do not recall any other posts about backing up using a VPN. It is not something I have tried; not immediately obvious why it would be a problem but it is always a possibility. Am I correct in assuming you have not change the location of the VPN connection?

Hopefully the repair installation has done the trick.

Ian

Ok, so repairing the installation didn't fix it.  Backups continued to pause randomly and then never start again.  This happens with or without a VPN.

However, I believe I have found a workaround.  I had 4 backup jobs, 2 local and 2 to the cloud, on a daily schedule starting roughly a half-hour apart.  I suspect the problem occurs when a backup takes longer than usual, and a scheduled backup can't start on time.  Now, I would have expected that the second backup would simply have been queued to run when the first one completed.  And I believe that's how it used to work.

So I spaced the start times for my backup jobs to be 3 hours apart, and have not had a problem since.  This seems to work whether or not the VPN is up.

Jim, you are correct that the backup task should simply have been queued to run once the active backup task completes. Not sure why it appears not be working for you at the moment. It still seems to work (for me) with a mixture of cloud and local backup tasks; some disk + partitions some files and folders.

At least you have found a work-around that appears to be working.
