Can anyone tell me exactly what I need to have running while not running a backup?

Thread needs solution

Here's my situation.....

I only do full backups of my hard drive to an external hard drive when I feel a backup is needed because my system doesn't change that much and I have my critical files being backed up to the cloud using Cloudberry Backup and my cloud storage isn't costing me anything.  When I do a full backup of my system I plug in my external hard drive and I manually trigger the backup so nothing is scheduled and nothing is occurring in real time and when I'm finished I quit True Image and disconnect my external hard drive.

The only thing I need and want to have available to me is the ability to plug in my external hard drive in an emergency situation and be able to double click on one of my backup TIB files and mount my last backup as a virtual drive so I can copy a file that I inadvertently deleted or has become corrupt and need to restore that file on the fly.

So, today I was running Microsoft's Process Monitor to determine what application was running in the background that was consuming large amounts of memory and hard drive resources.  It wasn't Acronis but I did notice that there were Acronis activity going on periodically in the background when the only application running was the process monitor and upon further examination there were Acronis related services running when I checked Task Manager.

So my question to you all is this..... Given the way I use and run True Image on my PC, what can I disable or turn off so that I can minimize what Acronis is doing in the background but still have the ability to mount a backup when I need to?

William, see KB 63256: Acronis True Image 2020: Windows services and processes for a list & description of each of these!  This applies to ATI 2020 and earlier back to 2018 versions.

In essence, you can (in principle) stop all but the Acronis Scheduler 2 service but (in practice) the Acronis Active Protection (AAP) service will have to be left active even if not being used and turned off in the GUI settings!

See KB 65464: Acronis True Image 2021: Windows services and processes if you have that version, where there are more unstoppable services!  AAP, Cyber Protection & AAKORE !!

The only alternative for your scenario would be to create & test using the Acronis 'Simple' version of the Rescue Media, then if all is good, uninstall the Windows ATI app and just boot the PC using the Rescue Media.  The key disadvantage of this option is that you won't be able to click on your backup image files and either mount or explore them, as the shell integration is only present when ATI is installed in Windows.

If you have no scheduled backups, you should be able to also stop the Scheduler2 service.

Thanks for the feedback.  I have ATI 2021 and disabled the following Services:

Acronis Managed Machine Mini

Acronis Nonstop Backup Service

Acronis Scheduler2 Service

Acronis Mobile Backup Server

Acronis Mobile Backup Status Server

I also disabled the Acronis Scheduler Service Helper in my startup.

I left the Acronis Agent Core, Acronis Active Protection Service and the Acronis Cyber Protection Service enabled but can someone explain to me why they need to be left on based on my usage?

William, you leave them on because ATI will not allow them to remain off. Even if you disable them they will come back. May as well not get your hopes up.

Hi Steve,   you leave them on because ATI will not allow them to remain off

Hello William,

added your comment as a vote for the change request TI-170767 Add ability to select what services to install or permanently disable them, thank you!
