Options will not load in Acronis True Image 2021

Thread needs solution

I've attempted several times to get back into the Options settings or Source on each of my back up configurations but I get the error message shown in the attached pic. I have read a previous forum item where someone was having a similar problem but the solutions there were of no avail. In that instance, settings in the registry were being removed by Registry Cleaning software. But that's not my experience. I have also repaired the program and while it works for a while, it soon gravitates back to the error.

This is pretty annoying when I want to check the options settings, or source files etc.  Any help would be appreciated.

Your screenshot shows the destination target to be a removable USB device.  Although that in and of itself has little to do with backup Options of the Source data, the application is not happy because it cannot find the destination location because either the target drive is disconnected or the drive letter of the device has changed since the last backup to it was run.

If the drive letter has changed due to your having attached another USB storage device, eject that device to free up the drive letter than reattach your target disk.  The other reason is self explanatory.

Thanks Enchantech.  Appreciate your reply and suggestions.  Yes the backups all go to three usb external desktop drives, which are permanently connected to the PC. They have not been disconnected or had their drive letters changed.

The interesting thing is - and I'm thankful for it - that all appropriate configured backups actual continue to work as scheduled to each of their appropriate drive settings.

Nevertheless, if one cannot access options in order to re-configure, there's clearly a problem of some kind.

Appreciate your help so far and perhaps there are further solutions you or other members of the forum may be able to provide. Many thanks.

Have you tried just rebooting the PC and associated backup drives as this can often solve these types of strange problems?  You can check how long it has been since the PC was last restarted by looking at the Performance tab after launching Windows Task Manager.

Thanks Steve. The pc is started daily and after each restart, the condition still exists.

Are you able to reselect the Destination drive by clicking on that panel?

Steve - No. I can't change source, destination or options at all.  Same message appears for each of them.

I have exactly the same issue on a fresh installation of W10 and a new install of True Image 2021.  I have tried reinstalling without success.

I did delete the database and this worked for one minute, but the same problem persists.

The only times that I have ever seen any issues with changing options etc has been when the specific backup task has been either queued or scheduled to repeat following an error condition.

I guess the question here to Gary and Swinners is, does this happen for all tasks, or only for a single task?  If only for a single task, then what is different about that task compared with any others you have that don't exhibit this problem?

In Steve's suggestion above to Restart your machines, my question of the posters is, you do know that Restart and Shutdown then startup are not the same thing don't you?

After a lot of faffing around, I have discovered the source of the problem (for me anyway)....Wise Registry Cleaner

Lots of trial and error/process of elimination, led me to realise that this cleaner utility is deleting a reg key, as per the attached screenshot.

"Software Paths"  can be excluded entirely, in the "Custom Area".  Manually creating the registry key;

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Acronis\TrueImageHome\Settings\BackupScriptsDir   value= BackupScriptsDir  resolves the issue, even though the folder doesn't exist !

hope it helps somebody

Thanks for sharing your update / cause.  Now that you have mentioned using a registry cleaner, it reminds me that there have been other reports in the forums with similar causes, i.e. using such as CCleaner and removing Acronis reg entries!  Not the first thought that occurred to me!

Yeah, glad you found the issue.  Registry cleaners can be useful tools but backing up the registry prior to using them is an absolute must as this incident proves.

In answer to Steve - yes it does happen for all events regardless.

I'll look at Swinners solution and see if that works for me. Let you know.

Well guys, that appears to have done it  I'll watch out for Registry Cleaning in future as well.  I see an update for 2021 is now available so see how it all goes.  Thank you for your help everyone.

Gary, glad the issue is resolved for you too via the tip from Swinners!

Update 5 / build #39216 doesn't seem to offer any major changes, and none that have been documented in the release notes!
