2009 (version 10) -- my computer died and I need to put my data files on the new computer
I read the online manual and searched the FAQs, but I guess my situation is unusual and I did not find my answer.
I tried to use support, but the web site does not recognize my serial number, which is printed in the disk holder that the disk came in. Therefore, I am asking for help on this forum.
My backup of course contains data and software. I understand that I cannot use Acronis to install software on my new computer. How do I find and copy the data files? I must admit, I have found the manual to be confusing. Thank you very much for your assistance.

Thank you, GroverH, it might. Am I allowed to install my current version on the new computer in order to use the recovery tool?

If your new computer is the only computer it is to be installed, you should be able to use it on the new computer only but I do not speak for Acronis--as I am volunteer only. Whether you want it installed is another issue. The 2010 version was the first to support Window 7 if that is what your new computer is.
If you plan on using the restore feature, you can use the Recovery CD for that feature. You may want to restore the files into a test folder and them later move them to where you want them.
However, my most important suggestion is that you use the Recovery CD to make a full and complete backup of your new computer and that backup should include any and all partitions--including any non-lettered or hidden partitions. The Windows Disk Management module will show your disk structure. You should print and retain a copy of that partition layout for use in the future--should you have a need.
If your new computer is Win7-8, you can also download the 2013 trial version. This can be installed (after the backup mentioned in prior paragraph) to to do the file restore you wish to do but 2013 is much different than your current version. A whole new learning curve needed. A purchased serial number can be input into the trial version if you wish to keep 2013.

Check your new computer under the start menu/maintenance folder and see there is an option to create a Windows Recovery Disk.
The Windows Backup feature can also be used to make a full and complete backup onto an external disk. Not as good as Acronis but it will suffice in an emergency.
Edited:
Did you ever register the serial with Acronis. If not, you should do so. Acronis will then store the number for you so it is always available and it can be copied and pasted into the program--rather than typed.
The serial number can be tricky if printed on the disk holder. Maybe use a magnifier.
Often times, the serial number is found inside or on the back of the user pamphlet.
Edit #2. Have you checked the help area of the CD to see if the serial is listed there.
