Is 2010 better than 2009
Just wondering, Have any of you guys used version 2010 of true image and like 2009 better? Or is 2010 version better? I am a new customer coming from Norton Ghost.
Thanks.

I beg to differ that 2009 works perfectly with vista. Because there is a know BSOD issue when inserting a usb thumbrive caused by tdrpm228.sys...and the ****** never fixed it. Now they hope to entice you to buy the ****** upgrade. I did it once before but it will never happen again. FIX YOU **** ACRONIS BEFORE ISSUING A PAID UPGRADE OR GIVE US THE UPGRADE FOR NOTHING>

If you use 12/2009 simply and ignore the bells and whistles, it will perform okay on much of the hardware out there. It has fatal flaws on some platforms, and serious flaws on almost all machines, which, as said won't show up if you use the program simply.
The questions to ask first is whether ATI 13/2010 is worse than ATI12/2010? Probably not, only the dreaded ATI 11 could be worse -- it's hard tomake a progam that badly. ATi 13/2010 does appear to have some probs with validations and task editing but those might be fixed in a subsequent update (there should be at least one update to ATI 13/2010 before ATI 14 is release in about 12 months. Also, unistalling prior ATI and installing ATI 13/2010 with as much other software and services not running as possible might also help with some of these probs that have been reprted for ATI 13.
Sam wrote:I prefer 2010 as it has a more streamlined interface and various improvements over 2009 (of course). v2010 is better suited for windows7. But if you are using windows XP or vista, v2009 is absolutely perfect and works without issue. I would personally get the latest version.

I like 2009 better so far, but I am hoping that 2010 will improve with some additional releases. The 2009 interface seems to be more confusing and cluttered, but 2010 seems buggy and unpolished.
Here's to hoping for improvements for 2010!

Agreed 2010 is full of bugs, especially nonstop backup.

My first experience with Acronis has not been good. I had moved to Vista and needed partitioning software. Since Partition Magic didn't support Vista, and unfortunately still doesn't, I thought I would try Acronis' products. So In April, I bought Disk Director Suite 10.0 and True Image Home 2009. I never really did much with either product except for a basic partiton resize. Then I installed Windows 7 RTM, initially just to check it out. I really liked it, so decided to move to it full time. After installing my programs and transfering some files, I decided I wanted a bigger drive.
I found True Image Home 2010 was finally released to production. GREAT! I bought the upgrade to 2010 (as well as the additional support) and a 1.5 TB drive. No problems installing, but ATI 2010 will not Clone my drive in Automatic mode at all. It says 1. my drive has errors on my disk and 2. my drive does not have enough space. It has over 3 times the space of my old drive so space shouldn't be a problem. OK, so I checked both old and new drives for errors... NONE found. So I called Acronis tech support, which I could barely understand, and was initally told I was not entitled to telephone support, even though Acronis' own website said I was! After getting "disconnected" I called back and sat on hold for about 30 min. The same tech answered... said he found I was entitled to phone support after all and was about to call me back... Yeah, right.
He took control of my desktop with the "TeamViewer" software. He tried to clone in Automatic mode, it failed. He then tried to clone in Manual mode using the Proportional method, it failed. He then tried AS IS method and it went past the error. But I told him I did not want to use only a third of the space on my drive. He said I could adjust the size with Disk Director... Yes I could, but 1. True Image is suppose to do it in conjunction with the clone process, and 2. more importantly I don't trust their products at this point. So he wanted to eliminate my computer as being the cause. We created a boot disk. It failed at the exact same place. He wanted to do an error check of my disk again. So we started that and let it run... I was to try cloning again after it finished the check of the disk and email him the results. I went to bed and checked in the morning. There were no errors. I tried to clone and it failed as I expected. I called support back that night and talked to a different guy. I understood him even less than the first.
OK... time to find the root of the problem. Was it my old drive, my new drive, or their product. My new Seagate drive came with software to clone, so I uninstalled ATI2010 and install Seagate's DiskWizard, which is an OEM Acronis product. The clone process worked perfectly! So my old drive was good, and the new drive is good... Gee, what's left? True Image 2010! I have a few smaller drives lying around, so I ran a few tests of my own...
Although not thorough tests, they were enough for me to decide this product should never have been put out as production product. It is BETA at best! This was a waste of money. From a lot of the posts I've seen in this forum, It was a waste of money for a lot of others as well. In hindsight, I wish I had read the forums prior to purchasing.
I'm now looking at Drive Backup 9.0 Personal Edition from Paragon Software as a possible replacement.

I know that this question is very old, so please don't give me too much of a hard time. My brain is still a little fried from this years tax season. Here goes: Have the bugs that everyone was talking about, when TI 2010 was first released, been fixed to the satisfaction of the experts? You guys really stay on top of these things, so I now know who to ask before I buy a semi-new program. You see, I'm really getting tired of kicking myself for buying before I have all the information you provide. Thanks very much for all of your knowledge and assistance that you provide.

If you use just the basic Backup, Recovery, and Clone features then 2010 should work for you. And if you can make do with manual proceedures using the Rescue CD then your chances of using 2010 successfully are even greater.

You are never going to get a satisfactory answer to this question unless you try it yourself, especially for this class of software. There is a trial version that you can download and experiment with for weeks. You can then come to your own conclusion. As you can tell from these forums several people have many issues with Acronis 2010, many of them are extremely angry and vocal about them. However, I have never had any of these issues with any build. Acronis always ran just fine for me on my Windows 7 Home system and on my previous Windows XP system. So there is no way of knowing how the software will run for you until you try it. Backup your system and give it a try.
While I am on the topic I will point out that it is a bad idea to try to gauge any software by the comments in the support forums of said software. After all, only people with problems and issues along with the curious come to support forums. If a piece of software sells a million copies and only 0.5% have problems and come to the forums then you are looking at 5,000 upset people posting thousands of threads and tens of thousands of posts of anger. And yet that only represents 0.5% of the user base. Conversely a support forum devoid of complaints is more likely the result of moderator forum magic than software quality.
Support forums are great for getting and evaluating the quality of support and for being aware of potential problems and risks when you are evaluating software as well as tracking the progress of certain bugs you may have encountered. They are bad gauges of the quality of the software. There are far better places to get such info, like reviews and comments on trusted websites.

Acronis has not fixed all the bugs; it rarely does. It releases a new version before the prior one is "perfected." If you're looking for perfection, Acronis is not the place. Howevere, ATI might be a good choice for your particular needs and your particular equipment. Get the trial and see if it does what you want.
Problems shouldn't be dismissed because "all software has problems" or because "forums always have lots of complaints." The probs with ATI (since ATI 11) are significant -- some even critical, depending on how you try to use it (e.g., nsb appears to not be ready for prime time at all).
Some of us long-time ATI users have stuck with ATI 10, rejecting the later editons and their problems. But for many folks one of the later editions will work for their needs, especially if their needs are simple.
The key thing to know is if ATI's probs will affect your use of the product and only you can answer that question by trying it.

I bought Acronis TIH 2009 and it was A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY. It would only work (get a successful message) about once a month if that...all the other times it either failed to run at all or if it ran it was alway full of error message about not being able to start or complete. I tried getting help from Acronis but was ignored. The forum was unable to solve the issues. I basically gave up and chalked it to I wasted my money and HOURS of time. Oh yea...I need to take the time to uninstall it as it frequently messes up when I reboot my computer...takes FOREVER to let my computer get past some sort of thing it does so I can actually logon. I have also woke up to a black screen with an Acronis error message telling me to insert the boot media and retry...what? Can't get past that message either and have to force the comptuer to shut down with the power button. Thankfully after doing that I can get back in to the computer (so far). All of this because of Acronis...not only a waste of money as it backs up nothing reliably but it also messes up the comptuer at random times durng reboots.
Then I get an email today that said "We are excited to offer you the Upgrade to Acronis True Image Home 2010 and Acronis True Image Home 2010 Plus Pack – free of charge! "
I definitely wouldn't spend another penny on this terrible product but I thought maybe, just maybe, they finally realized what a terrible product they had last year and they are finally trying to do something about it. I followed the link and IT IS NOT FREE AS PROMISED...they wanted to charge me $29.99. The previous version was a waste of money so why would anyone spend another dime to upgrade?
I would warn everyone NOT to buy this product...poor product and terrible support.

Hello all,
Cindy, on behalf of Acronis Customer Central I'd like to apologize for the difficulties you have experienced. Could you please clarify: what exactly happens when you were trying to use our software? Were there any error messages?
And regarding the e-mail offer: the thing is that this offer was for a paid upgrade to Acronis True Image 2010 Home and free Acronis Plus Pack, that is usually costs $29.99. We're really sorry for this confusion.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.

I just purchased TI 2010 upgrade when I click the desktop icon it does not open up.I uninstalled the trial version.I also uninstalled TI 2009.Is TI 2010 a stand alone upgrade or do I need to have TI 2009 already on my computer?I uninstalled 2009 thinking 2010 was a full upgrade. When I used the trial version it worked fine without the previous version. As it stands I can't even use it because it won't open up.Looks like a waste of money. Will try reinstalling. If it doesn't work will not buy this product anymore.

I have a BOAT LOAD of emails that went back and forth between myself and a couple of Acronis people. Re-reading them tonight brings back all the FRUSTRATION I was having just trying to get Sanjay to actually read what I wrote instead of giving me "canned responses" and repeatedly asking for things that I already sent him the first time but apparently he didn't take the time to actually read. Then some guy named Dennis sent a couple of emails but he never responded the second time I wrote him. I was so tired of wasting countless hours on this product and not getting any REAL help that I eventually just gave up.
I tried to go back into it tonight to see if I could recreate some new stuff for you but I must have uninstalled it (which I needed to do as it was causing extreme slowness when I rebooted the computer OR some mornings I would wake up to a black screen with the message that I needed to insert the boot media and hit any key...which didn't do anything to get out of this message and I had to forcibly shut down the computer with the power button to kill it).
If you will give me your email address I will forward the many communication attempts I made to Acronis to get this program to function. If you can fix it, I would love to have a backup program, especially since I wasted the money for 2009 and it was a total flop. I even asked in one email communication (after it was apparent that either Sanjay couldn't understand English or he wasn't even taking the time to read my detailed emails of the problems) was there a way we could do this over the telephone and I would allow you guys to take over my computer so that you could 'see' in live time the problems I was describing. Of course that suggestion was NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED either!
Thanks,
Cindy

Hello all,
Cindy, there's no need to re-send me all correspondence, just please let me know your case number. It will be enough to check all your e-mails with Acronis.
Michael, Acronis True Image 2010 Home Upgrade is a standalone package and there's no need to have a previous version of the software installed. I may recommend you to uninstall all Acronis True Image and start the installation of version 2010 once again. If the issue still persists, please gather additional information by the means of AcronisInfo utility and attach it to your reply.
We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.
Thank you.

I have used TI 10 11 2009 and tried the trial version of 2010. All worked on my three PC's. However, I only use their core application i.e. full image backups and restores and for this function they are first class. For preference I prefer TI 2009 - I'm using W7 64 bit W7 32 bit and Vista 32 bit. With the latest update of 2009 this now supports mounting images in W7 so no real reason to upgrade to 2010.

Can someone confirm Faust's comments concerning the TI 2009 supporting the mounting of images in Windows 7?
I have read the release notes of build 9809 and no where does it mention that it allows the mounting of images in Windows 7. I am using version 9796 with Windows 7 and everything seems to be okay. I really wish that I would be able to mount an image in a virtual drive. That was a feature that I used often in Windows Vista. I don't think that the image mounting feature by itself is worth the cost of the upgrade.

figures.. the only reason I bought the upgrade was I had trouble mounting an image after installing win7.. error message said to reinstall TI 2009, so I did and it still didn't work.
Then I remembered the email with the $29.99 upgrade offer.. so hey I figure that should fix it, right? Yikes what a headache.. it locked up my system hard. I took it off and visited these forums. so now I am running the latest version of TI 2009 with no worries and yes it mounts images just fine in win7 64 bit.
Guess I just wasted my$30 bucks.. grr

Hi,
I am a happy TI 2009 user and recently ungrade my system to Win 7x64. I found this forum last week and follow some of your advice to send the support a PM instead of posting the question on the board. I sent the PM last Thursday and got a reply from Oleg on Monday morning before I went work. I was offered a serial number of TI 2010 and the procedure of how to get the file and install. I did it after work without any proble. As I have upgrade my system with a 60G solid state hard drive, the initial back up took less than 6 mintues. I Have also made a bootable media and all performing very smoothly. I like TI 2010 over the 2009 as it is more easy to use.
Again thanks Oleg's quick response to my message and am very happy with the service and the product and of course you guys out there. Actually I had only paid for the TI 2009 and the upgrade to 2010 is free. I understand many of you may have frustration when the program is not running very well in your system but let's be patient and give them some time and problem will be fixed

If I may say so without sounding rude, this misses the point of what many of us have been trying to point out for quite awhile now (since the dreaded ATI 11), that Acronis doesn't fix much that's broken in it's ATI Home releases. It seems to to do maybe one interim update between version releases. And the new version always has the same or new critical problems. Waiting won't work with Acronis. Either you find a way to make ATI work for you, as is, or you go on to something else.
As the saying goes, you might get what you want but don't hold your breath.

After ATI2009 was released there were at least 8 builds released. The product was never fully fixed. Instead ATI 2010 was released.
How many build versions are there already for ATI2010?
The bottom line is that in my experience there is little quality control or testing by Acronis. Unfortunately we cant rely on magazine reviews of products for a number of reasons. Few people bother to report bugs they just dump the software and get something else. Life is too short.
Acronis I think are going no where until they do some world class quality assurance.
- Anmelden, um Kommentare verfassen zu können

Since ATI2009 was never fully fixed and they gave up on it and moved to ATI2010, why don't they give us a free upgrade to ATI2010?
I too bought ATI based on a review article. It took me a while to have the time to work on it and when I was having problems I thought it must be just me and my inexperience with it. I did try reporting the multitude of problems and did not get quality help. After a while I just gave up trying to get help as it was consuming too much of my limited time and I gave up and uninstalled it.
I still followed these threads, hoping to stumble upon a fix one of these days so I could get something out of my money I wasted on this product.
Ilya from Acronis above has offered to help but time is my problem right now. I have way too much to do to reinstall this and spend HOURS working on it again so I hope the offer of help is open-ended. One of these days I would like to try again.
BUT it would be much better if they simply offered a product that worked like it was supposed to in the first place so that it would be easier to move on with a back up system. Since I wasted my money on ATI2009 I haven't had enough courage to look for and experiment with any other backup system. So one of these days I might really be regretting my lack of a good program.
How about this Ilya? It is just possible to allow us an upgrade to an ACRONIS TI program that works simply the way it is advertised and save me a lot of time?
Thanks,
Cindy

What you suggest is simply not how Acronis works. It comes out with a new version every hear come heck or high water. This means work on prior version probably stops at least six months before the new version comes out. Thus you stop seeing any significant updating to a version after roughly Feb -- remaining bugs be damned.
Come september you can buy a new version, which will come out around september, that might or might not have the prior bugs fixed and that will probably have some critical bugs of its own that might or might not be fixed by Feb or you can buy the next version that comes out around setember . . .
There has been thus a disitnct pattern since the dreaded ATI 11 came out.
Apparently, Acronis's business motto is, "If you don't like it, you can lump it. But pay me again next year and maybe I'll treat you better. . ."
It's like the days when some auto companies kept on building really crappy cars because, they figured, people keep buying new cars year after year. It turned out to be a bad long term strategy, as business models go.
It's really rather sad and pathetic.
Cindy Backstein wrote:Since ATI2009 was never fully fixed and they gave up on it and moved to ATI2010, why don't they give us a free upgrade to ATI2010?
. . .
Thanks,
Cindy

Most magazine reviewers don't actually test the product, or don't test it very extensively, and rely on press releases from the manufacturers more than anything else. Thus, you have things that obviously don't work being reviewed and reported as "nicer features."
There are some exceptions, some really good reveiwers; but I don't recall seeing one review ATI in recent times.

I have complained about Acronis as much as the next person. However, some of the posters aren't being totally fair here. Whether Acronis works for you does depend to some extent on the hardware that you install it on. For me at least ATI 2009 is the ultimate Acronis product. I have it installed on three machines - a pretty recent Quadcore running W7 64bit, an eight year old P4 running Vista 32bit and a 4 year old Laptop built for XP MC, then Vista, I'm now running it with W7 32bit. TI 2009 runs flawlessly on all three machines and it has done so with all the builds right from day one.
Simply trying to add some balance to the discussion.

Acronis TIH-2010 vs. ATIH-2009:
I switched from Ghost as a back up after almost 7 years. ATI-11 worked flawlessly for me in every instance except it failed to see all of my hard drives when I booted from the CD. ATIH-2009 solved that problem. In fact having both CDs in a single blue envelope is my solution. I am not sure what ATI-2010 will bring to the table but I shall examine it today.
Lastly I will say that Acronis software has saved me a huge amount of time and effort. I consider it money well spent even with the flaws I have just mentioned.

Nice to see someone else with a positive view of Acronis. The trouble with some of these threads and I'm not trying to minimise other posters problems believe me, however, it does appear as though it's all very negative and you tend to forget just how good Acronis really is.

I wish I could say Acronis was good! I went into it thinking it was going to be good but had such severe unsolved problems and poor help from Acronis (you know- the ones who never read the actual problem details but send you a "form letter" type response as to what to do --and if they would have read the complaint they would have seen we have tried what they are suggesting or what they are suggesting has absolutely no relationship to the problem at hand).
I ended up deleting the program since it was not backing anything up -- it almost always had failure error messages that made no sense, and it caused such problems at boot up - slowed the computer down tremendously for no reason at all, especially since it wasn't even backing anything up.
I will look around and hopefully didn't delete the program itself (purchased it as a download so I don't have a CD) and when I have time try it again and see if a new set of eyes can do better than what I was dealing with when I first bought it.
I REALLY DO WISH I had only good things to say about it. Heck I wish I had SOME good things to say about it but I had a completely negative experience and totally wasted my money for a program that did not work.

I'm assuming you were using TI 2010 and were you also trying to do anything other than full image backups and restores and using NSB? If so then can I recommend you try the 2009 version and just stick to what it does well i.e. full images.

I think you are overstating the case in both directions. First rarely, if ever does someone say that ATI doesn't work at all on any machines, so a single coutnerexample is rather a strawaman argument. Secondly, and more importantly, I think it misses the point of the comlaints. A common, serious, and recurring complaint is that some of the versions have and still have critical faults, that sometimes these faults are not fixed except in subsequent versions for which additional purchases are required to get the fixes, that support from Acronis can be, to say the least, wanting.
Many of us who have complained also have said good. I have used ATI for many years, and devoted many hours and literally thousands of posts to support of the product -- and I still hope Acrdonis will turn around its business strategy and put product and customer first again. However, I haven't purchased a version I liked since ATI10, and the general problems listed above seem not to have lessened over time but worsened. Sure it's important to note that ATI works for some folks -- although it should be noted that this tends to be those that avoided most of ATI's features btw. Both of these things have been said amny times on this forum by many folks. Further, in any event, any prospective purchaser should try the product before purchasing it including testing, among other things, whether it will severely hamper the operation of the pc and seeing if the CD will recognize their equipment -- which is essential for a restore.

I wouldn't argue for a minute with a lot of what you said. ATi 10 is always used as the yardstick when measuring success of this product. However, although it always worked for me it was painfully slow on all three of my machines - non of my machines hardware liked the Linux drivers so USB2 became USB1 - 22 hours for a restore was no fun I can tell you. All subsequent versions have been cured of that fault. I only use ATi for full images as it's the whistles and bells where it all appears to go wrong. Using it like I do I have found all versions work 100% of the time and restore 100% of the time. I don't think you can ask for better than 100%.

It’s interesting that TI9 is recommended therefore I replaced TI10 with it and got a message that it’s not compatible with Win7 32 bit! This is in a Thinkpad T60, while my desktop XP runs TI10 without a hiccup. TI 10 seems to backup fine but when a restore is made to test it the drive won’t boot. I’ve been using TI since ver. 7 so I like to know the backups are good and most of the time over the years they have been. I do only full BU of my “C” partitions usually with less than 20G data. The T60 has less than 10G of data in a 50G partition. Is TI brand conscious?

Well, if they had put the USB improvement into a revised ATI 10 instead of the infamously dreaded ATI11 (the first really bad version Acronis unleased), then Acronis would have really had something. And then added drivers to accomodate newer hardware -- keeping it up to date -- that would have been something! Instead. It's kept coming out with "new" versions, each crippled in its own way. ATI2009 is probably the best of the later bunch, provided yo don't mind the cockamaimie method of automating backup-file management or the database and scheduling probs.

Scott Hieber wrote:Most magazine reviewers don't actually test the product, or don't test it very extensively, and rely on press releases from the manufacturers more than anything else. Thus, you have things that obviously don't work being reviewed and reported as "nicer features."There are some exceptions, some really good reveiwers; but I don't recall seeing one review ATI in recent times.
I agree 100% with this response. I know several computer magazine reviewers and they dont properly test products. They get the software sent to them free by the software house and their aim is to get magazine copy out as fast as possible.
