2011 always fails at end of backup

Thread needs solution

At the end of a backup I always get the error:

Pending operation 144 started: 'Saving partition structure'.
Failed to open data stream.
Operation has completed with errors.

Backup is to an FTP server. Automatic login always is successful for the backup data.
When "Open backup location" a windows explorer window opens with the FTP URL but an unsuccessful login.

It appears there is a disconnection between stored login for the backup and doesn't work for the last operation and open backup location.

Build 6597.

I also reconfigured the backup to use a mapped drive letter. It fails the same way. So it is not FTP dependent.

When I click to "Open backup location" an authorization window opens with my userid and password filled in. Continuing leads to the proper folder. Why ask for authentication when the backup proceeded without asking AND the network drive is mapped to a drive letter that reconnects at login?

Seems this is similar problem to a posting by Craig Nelson today.

Hi,

I have the same problem, just started today after upgrading to build 6597 yesterday!

Come on Acronis, have you never heard of regression testing....!

If you have it set to validate at the time of backup that could be the problem. Try and make a backup without validation. The latest build seems to have this problem. You can validate after the backup completes. I had the same problem backing up to USB drives. It slows down to a crawl at the end of validating IE: 10 minutes remain takes 30 or more and than it fails with that error.

I am trying to just do a backup to my G drive, 1.5 Tb internal drive, no FTP. I have been totaly unsuccessful to back up my D drive, I am geting the "FAILED TO OPEN DATA STREAM". All of the other disks back up successfully.
Any idea what to do?

Here is how one user resolved this issue.
"FAILED TO OPEN DATA STREAM"

thanks for the reply but still no joy done it twice and no luck it gets to the end of backup and says failed to open data stream completed with errors dont know what else to do :(

To those imaging to a network environment, some thoughts.

1. Only use UNC or IP addressing to the network, Acronis products don't like mapping all that much.

2. Does extending the timeout period in TIH make any difference?

3. If using W7 or Vista, delete ftp credentials in credential manager, and re-enter them when TIH asks for them and see if ti runs OK after that.

@ Joseph,

If you are imaging to a USB drive, have you tried moving it to a different port and if any card readers attached or USB hubs removing them and see if that solves the problem.

hi all

ive had this program now for 4 weeks or so and still not been able to backup my pc im always getting the same error failed to open data stream i have done what it said and tryed the removal tool but still the same results im running on 64bit windows 7 any ideas ? do acronis members ever answer the problems as am very annoyed now Ive had nothing but problems since i upgraded wish i had`nt now

I've experienced the same issue here yesterday.

First I must say that it'd be nice if TI had some more meaningful error message at that point, e.g. as in telling us which file actually failed to be accessed, instead of a generic "failed to open stream" or whatever it was. :P

Then, for me the error was caused by the function to "clean up old backup-sets automatically". I had set a backup schedule to do incremental backups (to a local harddisk, no Netbios or FTP or stuff), and a full backup every 14 incrementals. Also I had it instructed to keep at most 5 previous backup-sets.

I recall that a few days ago I manually deleted some old backup files, which probably was what got TI confused. It tried to clean up old files, which were already gone. Turning off the "auto-cleanup" function circumvented the problem for me.

For a real solution, I'll probably need to refresh TI's internal database of available backup files. I'll do some further investigation here and keep you informed when I find out new stuffs.

Hello all,

Thank you for posting and your help.

I will do my best to assist you.

There is a similar thread here about the error - Failed to prepare data stream. Check whether the source and target partitions exist.

We are still investigating it and I would really appreciate if you can send me the following information:

1. AcronisInfo report.

2. Process Monitor logs to capture the error.

3. Wireshark logs if the backup is saved to a network share.

4. CdRecord logs if the backup location is a CD/DVD.

Looking forward to your reply and if you have additional questions, please let me know.

Thank you.

Very disappointed in the upgrade to 11 Home. Had no problem with dual boot XP and Suse Linux using 10.

Here's what was reported on my first attempt of backup Windows 7 and Suse Linux 11.3 Eighth DVD:

Never got to Linux backup. Trying backup as separate device and it is going terribly slow.

As a followup to previous post. The backup of the Linux drive failed on the fifth and what was probably the last DVD needed with the same errors. Apparently there is some disconnect at the end of the backups. I want something solid from Acronis not guesses before I trash another 13 DVDs.

I tried backing up only the Windows drive and it failed with the same error (Failed to open data stream) as reported in the log.
It was on the 4th DVD (16+gig) and never unloaded or verified completion or anything for that matter. I think this product is broken.

I too am now having this problem. I see this has been going on since 2009 for some folks, but have yet to see any hint at a solution save for requests to send in log files. Is there a fix? This just started occurring for me. I am running Windows 7 and backing up to a external drive via USB connection. Again, this used to work just fine for the past few weeks and now it is failing.

What version of ATI are your running Alex?

2010 is the first version that officially supports Win 7.

Make sure you have the latest 2010 version, or the latest 2011 version.

I am a new customer having done a first-time install about two weeks ago. Also, I just checked and am indeed running the very latest 2011 version.

Alex,

The build number would be useful as there is more than one latest version depending on the language and even if you have US English or British English.

Alex,

Often new customers do quite a bit of tweaking in their backup settings as they solidify their backup strategy. With ATI 2011, too much tweaking (whatever the treshold is) can result in ATI losing track of which backup is where.

Can you successfully run a manual validation on your backup?

If yes, try uninstalling ATI, running the cleanup utility, rebooting, and reinstalling first.

If no OR if you have gone through the uninstall/reinstall above, set up a new task with a new name backing up the same data in a new destination folder on the same backup disk and to see if the backup runs OK. IF it does, you do some clean up of the older backup later.

My build is also 6696.
I tried backing up my linux disk using the windows drive as a location instead of my DVD drive.
It completed and was validated afterward but what baffles me is that
1) what Acronis sees as the linux partitions are listed as unamed
yet
2)are listed in Files and folders as C:-F: with C: checked marked.
I'm afraid this could cause recovery issues.

My attempt to backup my windows7 disk failed with the same "Failed to open data stream".
The only possible location I have for this backup is my DVD drive. It does not see the linux drive as a possible location.
Does Acronis usually see the drive used by Linux as a location? It seems like it did in ATI 10.
Could the use of LVM filesystems be a factor?
