Access to the file is denied

Thread needs solution

I am trying to backup a laptop partition to a hard drive on a networked computer.
The task fails almost immediately with "Access to the file is denied."
Which file? I have full administartor access to all partitions on all machines in my network!
Event code is: 0x00040014
System information file generated by Acronis is attached.

Laptop is Acer Aspire 5745pg running Windows 7 (x64) Ultimate 4Meg memory.

All suggestions very gratefully accepted......

Bob,

How are you accessing the network drive, mapped share, UNC, IP or ftp?

Is this a Synology NAS?

Do you have SMB installed?

Has this ever worked?

Hi Colin,

Target drive is network mapped and shared (UNC) with full access. I have no problem in getting to it as a normal mapped drive from the laptop. It's only Acronis which appears to have a problem.

I have tried to access a NAS (IP) drive on the same network with the same negative result. Not sure what "Synolgy" is?

Not sure what "SMB" is?

It has never worked - I only installed Acronis a few days ago.

Cheers and thanks,

Bob

Bob,

Acronis products tend not to like mapped drives. What might get things working for you is to unmap the drive, then access it in 2012 via \\NAS_name\archive_folder_name\image_name, once you've added your credentials, 2012 should be happy and you can remap the NAS again.

Try also and see if you can ftp into your drive, it'll be slower but at least you might be able to connect.

Synology is a brand of NAS that 2012 is having a great deal of difficulty in playing nicely with. There are a couple of models it is happy with and the rest it isn't.

SMB is a protocol (otherwise known as SAMBA which allows Linux/Unix based OS's to talk to Windows OS's) that many NAS's can operate with. Many NAS's run a version of Linux internally and so TIH likes and is normally happy to work with SAMBA enabled device.

Before you attempt the above though, if you have access to a USB drive, I would just double check that 2012 can access that - just a couple of files and folders would do, just so we know that 2012 is working in all other respects.

Thanks Colin,

I have just got a backup to start by following your advice above and in response to item 2248 (I think!) on this forum.

It's OK for a workaround but disappointing. Anyway, thank you for responding - backup still going but could take some time!

Cheers,

Bob

Same problem here, but I dam using a Synolgy NAS 410+. One computer shows a mapped drive of Z:\judy\xxx and the other computer shows a drive of \\TIGER\charlie\xxx. Both show 'Access denied . . .'. Is this a lost cause?

I'm currently using LSoft's Active@Disk, but your write ups indicate a better product.

Charlie

Hello all,

Thank you for your comments. Colin, thanks a lot for your assistance.

As Colin has already mentioned, we do strongly recommend to unmap the drive and use a UNC path as an address. The reason is simple: when you map a drive, it becomes mapped only under your Windows account. The Acronis product runs its tasks using the system account and so it is sometimes impossible to locate your mapped drive (especially when you are logged off).

Please find more details and workaround description in this KB article.
