Thread needs solution

I am new to this.I just installed accronis true image home 2010 in my laptop with vista os.I am trying to image evry thing (operating system and applications and files )on an external hard drive which is 1.5 TB.my laptop is only 500 GB.when I try to do this using clone disk feature of accronis, after going through all steps,a box pops up and says:"Failed to move the selected data.make sure your new hard drive is not smaller than your old one and your partitions do not contain errors.you can check for errors and correct them using a special utility."I have already formated new drive and scaned for errors using tools in my computer and found nothing.I have quick books in my laptop with important files and can not afford to loose them.can anyone help me out?

To create an image of your laptop, you need to use the backup feature. The clone feature is not what you want when using TrueImage software. The clone feature would make your 1.5 external into a 500GB external and that is not what you want.

By creating a backup image of your laptop, you will end up with a backup archive file which will be about 60% of your used laptop space. By creating a backup archive, you can end up with room enough on your external for several backups.

Click on the index link inside my signature below. Read the backup guide in item 7A plus many of the items inside the #7 and #2 link.

If I use backup feature, can I create an image of laptop, including operating system in external hard drive which is bootable?also what is the differnce between back up and clone?and finally can I backup three computers that each have 500GB hard drive into one external which is 1.5 TB ?
Thanks again for educating me.

Hello all,

GroverH, you're absolutely correct, thank you for your help.

Hashem, let me answer your questions. When you create a backup archive, it'll include all your programs and OS, however it will not be bootable.

The Backup wizard of Acronis True Image creates an image file for backup and disaster recovery purposes, while the Disk Clone tool simply copies/moves the entire contents of one hard disk drive to another. Here's how both tools work and when you should use them.

When you create an image with Acronis True Image, you get an exact copy of your hard disk, a disk partition or individual files or folders (you make this choice when you create an image archive). If you choose to back up a hard disk drive or a partition, then every portion of the hard disk that has data written to it (sectors) is saved into a compressed file - or multiple files if you prefer. You can save this image to any supported storage device and use it as a backup or for disaster recovery. (Note: if Acronis True Image cannot identify the file system, it creates a sector-by-sector image of the disk. This image is not compressed and the image file will be of the same size as the disk being imaged.)

When you use the Disk Clone tool, you effectively copy/move all of the contents of one hard disk drive onto another hard disk drive. This function allows you to transfer all the information (including the operating system and installed programs) from a small hard disk drive to a large one without having to reinstall and reconfigure all of your software. Migration takes minutes, not hours, but it is not generally used as a backup strategy.

And the answer to your last question: you can store several backups (i.e. backup several PCs) to the same external hard drive.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thank you.

Hashem,
While the backup itself is not bootable, a disk option backup can be used to restore the backup onto a new or old drive and the drive itself will be bootable when properly restored. Check item 7D inside my signature index. The time you spend looking at these guides can be very helpful and answer a lot of your questions.

Hi
My next question is ,if I want to move every thing to external hard drive and then change the operating system in my laptop which is vista and I am told that it is not a good os to windows 7,then what should I do?should I use clone,or just backup. If I back up,after I changed os and installed windows 7,when I am transfering everything back to laptop, all the programs are going to be there or I have to reinstall them again?most of my concern is my quick Books software since I have lots of data, that I can not loose.
Thank you for your help and I appologize if I am slow understanding all this.

Have you read any of the references I have suggested in prior postings?

If you are upgrading to a new operating system, most (including me) will suggest that you should re-install your all your programs via a fresh install. A backup of your files could be used for you to drag and drop (or copy & paste) your personal data files--not not your program files.

However, you might want to visit this link below. I do not know anything about the results.
