Acronis 12: backup validation error Archive is corrupted (0x70020)
If I turn off “validation” the backup archive has no errors and the backups work for a restore.
If I turn on validation I get an error.
Should I just ignore the error?

Janet,
Does yor backups involve differential backups?
If yes, have you deleted any old differential backups?

Yes I use differential backups
This is my routine:
I have 2 external hard drives
One is attached to my computer
One is in a safety deposit box
I switch them @ every 2 months.
I format the old one external HD and use it.
I delete all the Acronis backup setting and start with new backs up
Thank you GroverH, from Janet

Janet,
I have seen this issue when some of the diff parts of the chain has been deleted or missing.
The diff type only needs the full plus one diff (if any diff needed) for a successful restore.
But, for safety sake, I would start a new task and point to a new sub-folder for storage on the same or different disk.

Hi GroverH
I think you have pointed me in the right direction, thankyou!
One more question.
I used the Acronis -delete- function the one that you access by right clicking on the name of the task/backup; to delete several large tib files.
The tib file was not in the recycle bin and the file was gone so quickly (they were all 70 gigs)
I had to wonder what did Acronis do with the tib file? where did it go so quickly? How did it delete so quickly?
Thanks again Janet

Figure 11-Dif: -Example of custom/differential backup method settings
Change the 6 or 4 to fit your needs. Allow space for 1 more full than your selected number (4) as TI will NOT delete the oldest full or chain until its replacement has been created.

It was gone so quickly because all they had to do was to change the first character of the file name to make it disappear. I have complained and complained about the "delete" option which is blind to its consequences. Hopefully, it will be changed in one of the next releases. Your method is fine as long as you know that all the backup files will be gone as well.
Next time you want to delete some file. I can suggest a different way. Your method is the easiest and quickest as long as you understand that all the backup files will be gone as well.
Another way of controlling what is to be deleted is to
Right click somewhere inside the task ( or Right click on the RECOVER Button)
Click on "Recover Files"
Now a new window opens called TrueImage Backup Explorer.
Click on upper left corner "Disk option" rather than files backup.
Now all your backups should be listed along the bottom margin.
Examples:
Right click on the most recent and it will be deleted as a single delete.
or
Right click on the full and the full and all its diff will be deleted.
If you should need to do a recovery from within Windows, this is the screen where you would select the specific *.tib file. Personally, I do all recoveries when booted from the CD as it offers lessor obstacles.
Figure 22: True Image Backup Explorer View: Task Explore & Recover View Plus File DetailsIt is this screen where individual backup files can be deleted from the existing task without deleting the task. Deletion of incremental backups will spoil the backup chain..

Hi GroverH
I have been using Acronis and never had a chance to talk to any one that uses it, so thankyou for all this helpful info.
I am going to make a few changes to my backup schedules and properties, at least now I know what is causing the errors.
The one risk with the hard drives is that someone could steal one of my external hard drives.
What I did for that is create an encrypted partition on the external HD where I keep the copies of the files with financial data etc.
I am still not brave enough to mount the whole Acronis backup onto an encrypted drive!
Thanks again from Janet

One important part is to test that your recovery procedure works which involves recovering some files or disks, etc. Don't wait until you have a crisis only to find something is not there or does not work. Do the practice or testing before your nerves get touchy.
Too many users backup only drive-c whereas they need to backup all partitions on the disk (disk image backup) in order to create a replacement disk.
Open Windows Disk Management console and take a screen capture & do a priint out of the graphical view. This shows how many partitions you have and how they are arranged (sequence) and which is the active partition. Stick this printout away as should you ever need to create a replacement disk (disk failure), the information printed could be important to have.

TrueImage has a learning curve and there is no avoiding it--if you want to protect your data.
Good luck. If you have other issues or questions, come back to the forum and the volunteers will usually provide assistance.
