Acronis 2010, Destroyed my Windows

Thread needs solution

I upgraded to 2010 and rebooted. My Windows XP would not boot, hanging on the splash screen. I then paid $9.95 to get tech support but even with that, the phone recording said, lines are busy go to the chat. No chat could be found anywhere. I need my system back. I tried to remove Acronis in Safe Mode under the guidance of a tech support person from India(?) and got a "can't do that" because I'm in Safe mode. The techy then deleted a hundred or so entries from my REGEDIT. Nothing seems to fix it. HELP!

What is wrong with Acronis, the company?

The phone lines are having trouble, the phone says.

Help should be for free for 30 days, but doesn't have a way to actually access help unless you pay.

The program chews up otherwise healthy systems.

Acronis instead of providing peace of mind, created havoc and chaos.

Help!!!!!

I agree...I purchased almost a year ago and have NEVER got it to work flawlessly. Most of the time it is giving me error messages and fail messages. TOTALLY UNRELIABLE. What a waste of money. At least it did not wipe out my system like your's did. I thought I'd waste some time and see if I could get anything to work after all this time and start fresh. Instead it is wanting me to insert an archive that I don't have just to work at all...I wanted to start from scratch and can't get rid of these error messages. WHAT A WASTE OF MONEY!

Hello Larry and Cindy,

First of all, I'd like to apologize for the inconvenience we caused to you by lack of response from our side and delay with response.

As far as I understand, you've tried to install the upgrade over the previous version, restarted your PC and it does not boot anymore, hanging on Windows logo screen, is that correct? Also, you are able to boot in Safe mode, right?

If yes, let me list some possible causes:

-SnapAPI driver conflict after installation (when you're installing one version over the old one, it overwrites drivers from old version)

-Some kind of registry corruption, caused by the same conflict

-Corrupted MBR

And that's what our Support Engineer tried to do - completely remove all traces from all versions from your registry. Please check the solutions below:

- Please reboot your computer to load last known boot configuration:

When your computer starts but before Windows launches, press F8.
On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press F8 when the boot menu appears. Then use the arrow keys to highlight the Last Known Boot Configuration, and then press ENTER.

After that, please check if you're able to boot your system correctly.

If this does not help, let's remove SnapAPI drivers from your system. Please boot your system in Safe Mode (use the same instructions as I provided for Last Know Boot Configuration, but choose Safe Mode). Then do the following:

  • Delete snapman and snapman380 keys from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services
  • Delete snapman and snapman380 strings (only snapman or snapman380 string, do not touch other items) from:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} -> UpperFilters
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{71A27CDD-812A-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} -> UpperFilters

Note: please check this article for the detailed description on how to remove SnapAPI from operating systems.

Then please restart your machine and check if the issue persists.

If it does, let's repair your Master Boot Record as follows (the instructions below can be applied for XP version only, please check this article for the information on how to fix it on other systems):

Please boot up from the Windows Bootable CD, then go to the Recovery Console (the
first Repair option you come to).

From the command prompt please type:

FIXMBR C:
FIXBOOT C:
BOOTCFG /rebuild

After that, please reboot your computer.

If you prefer to fix MBR using a CD, then please download special Acronis utility. Use it to create a CD and boot the machine from the CD.

The MBR will be rewritten once you boot the computer from the created media and confirm that you want to fix the MBR.

If the issue persists we recommend that you perform a repair installation of your Windows. Windows Repair Installation will keep your applications and configuration untouched and will allow you to install the appropriate drivers in order to make Windows bootable. The full description of this process is available in the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article.

Cindy, could you please be more specific? What exactly happens when you're trying to use the product? Could you please provide me with the exact text of the error messages you receive? Could you please provide me with the exact sequence of actions that lead to the issue you report, so that I can try to reproduce it?

Larry, please let me know if you're able to resolve the issue by following the instructions I provided above. Also, do not hesitate to ask me if you have any other questions, I would be glad to assist you.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.
