Acronis 2014 Update too big
I backup once/week (manually, full version). I have Win 7, 64 bit, HP. I keep one old backup and the new one (both full versions). The backup goes to an extra hard-drive. Since I have updated to Acronis 2014, I have noticed, that sometimes the backup is unusually large (instead of 90 GB it was 150 GB last night). I deleted it immediately and backed up again and I then got my 90 GB. I think that I must have ticked something, that causes this problem, but I cannot find, what it is. I have unticked the cloud and in Services I disabled the Nonstop backup. I also would like to untick the Schedule, but it always comes back. I do not like to schedule backups, because my computer is not on all the time. Could somebody please help? Thanks Helga

Hi Grover, thanks for your help. When I turn off the backup scheduler, the next time I look, it is back on again. I have disabled it under Services, but it does not help. I want to do a manual backup to my extra hard drive once/week, but it seems impossible (I have been doing it for years). Whenever, the scheduler is on, my backup is bigger. When I delete it, I can then do a normal backup. It also gave me the message that the conversion to Windows backup is corrupt. I have never tried to convert it to a Windows backup. Maybe you can think of something that will help. Thanks Helga

No, it is not practical to turn off the scheduler via Windows services,
but you can bot stop and disable the
nonstop bacukup service and the
sync-agent service.
Is the full backup you are running a
files only backup, or
partition backup, or
disk image backup.
The backups should be reasonably consistent in size.
A defrag, or a system restore point, or a bad sector read could account for some fluctuations.
Simulate editing the task and examine/confirm what is checked for being included within the backup. Don't change, just view.
You mght also mount the large image and look visually,
or you could download a program such as "Treesize Free" and the next time a size variance occurs,
mount both the normal and large backups and look at them via Treesize which lists each folder and ranks according to size so the differences should be apparent from within Treesize.
The conversion failure would point me toward a disk check for disk or file errors. If errors found, run the disk check twice.

Hi Grover, in the past all my backups were fairly consistent. Yesterday, I eliminated the first backup, which was outsized and when I did the backup again, it was normal and I was able to validate it o.k. Whatever, I have tried, the scheduler turns back on and even if I turn it off, the following backup was either corrupted or too big. The scheduler scheduled Saturday, when I do my backup anyhow. However, when I schedule another day, then I automatically get a backup, if I forget to constantly check, whether the scheduler is on or off. I do not use synchronization (nor the Cloud). It also puzzles me, why it tried (sometimes) to convert to a Windows backup, which I do not want. I am doing a backup of drive C (partition backup). The backups seem o.k. and I can restore files. I ran a disk checker the other day (sfc /SCANNOW) and I also run the one under C/Drive Tools. However, I will try "Treesize".

What you need to do is from inside TrueImage, use the tools/mount option and mount a normal size backup (use the option to only mount C),
then with that drive mounted, then also mount the extra large backup (again, mount only C).
Then close trueimage and open Windows explorer.
As you will see, you now have two copies of Drive C which is your backups.
Right click on the normal size backup and click on the Treesize option from the right click menu.
after the Tree size listing is complete, then again from the Explorer menu,
right click on the extra large backup and wait for Tree size to complete.
then close the explore so only the two Treesize listings is displayed.
Compare the folder sizes, etc.
as per illustration attached.
Don't forget to return to TI and unmount the two mounted backups.

Hi Grover, yesterday I deleted the extra large backup. However, before doing so, I looked on my E-drive (where I keep the backups) and I found that the extra large backups, seemed to be two backups, which looked identical too me. I deleted them and ran the backup again and I finished up with one sequence. I therefore have not used Treesize yet, but I will try it next time (if the problem happens again). I still think that it has something to do with the scheduler. It is not happy with me doing the manual backup and it just forces another backup on me. I have been doing the Acronis backup for years and I never had this problem before. Thanks for helping. Helga
