Acronis True Image 2010 and 2011 do not work well in Windows 7 64bit
Are you going to do anything to fix the CLONING PROBLEM?
I used the 2010 on Windows 7 32bit to clone the laptop HDD into a external HDD [USB2] fine since I upgraded to 2010.
I then re-installed Windows 7 at 64bit in order to be able to use the full amount of memory, only to find 2010 does not clone anymore.
So, to make it fast - as you usually add latest 'solved' problems on your latest version of the programme to make us spend more ! - I purchased the 2011 only to find exactly the same problem.
I tried all I could find in your knowledge base and forums:
1. fit the NEW HDD into the laptop and clone 'from' the external USB
2. clone from the internal to the external HDD
3. points 1and 2 were tried using either the programme or from its rescue disks
4. I partitioned, un-partitioned, re-formatted, etc.
5. yes the HDD are functioning fine and recognised by W7 and they all are Layout: simple and Type: basic
I have sent a support request yesterday and no reply today.
This is the error I get when I use the Rescue Disk to CLONE HDD:
======================================
see attached log file
======================================
Maybe I need to buy Paragon and try it and then ask for refund of your True Image 2011.
I only use the clone feature and it does not work, if it was other features I would not have been bothered - but I have now wasted 2 BUSINESS days and the upgrade £££ with no results.
Shall I send you an Invoice for the wasted business days?
Get a grip!

Hi
Thank you for your input.
I believe I found out the problem.
It probably was the minimum amount of free space in the source drive!
When I re-installed W7 at 64bit, I used a far smaller HDD I had to check if all my main 32bit programmes were working fine at 64bit and they were, only I forgot the HDD was small.
I did increase the HDD free space, but it was slightly smaller than 5% - that was it.
What I am surprised of, the programme does not even mention something like - the cloning cannot go on, please free --Gb and start again.
Instead I used to get an error which is not listed on Acronis website:
Error code: 9 - a file system error has been found - with extended code 458,776 MFT bitmap is corrupted
Event code 0x013C005
The above code should be fixed with the do FREE --Gb source HDD space!
I hope they fix it.
M
PS I did use Acronis Director Disk Suite and re-virgined the HDD, but it did not work

Hi all,
Thank you for your comments. GroverH, thank you for your assistance.
Pincopallino, thank you for reporting about the solution you've found. I have forwarded this information to the Development team, they will check the situation.
I also wanted to add that it's highly recommended to check the disk and file system for errors when receiving such an error.
Disk and file system check can be performed in the following way:
- Go to Start -> Run -> Cmd and press Enter
This will get you to the Windows Command line - Once in the cmd, please issue the following command:
chkdsk /f /r
And reboot the machine
Upon booting Windows will run file system and disk check and fix the errors, if any.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please, let us know, we will be glad to help.
Thank you!

Hi
Yes, I did defragged it [not Msoft defragger!] as well and chkdsk it before hand, also because I may do a Disc Image - but having about 350Gb of data maybe a disk image would require too many discs?
The only reason I have had this problem was because 'initially' I used a smaller HDD just to check W7 64bit was fine with all my main programmes and forgot it was 1/3 of the usual drive, hence having less than 5% free space (it was about 4.5%) - I cleared some space and worked fine.
I am now using this laptop with the cloned 'new' drive and works perfectly.
M
PS I never had a bad cloned HDD with acronis ever - maybe because I do defrag and chdsk the HDD prior the operation and I only had one error - not important

Hi again
Strangely, 5 minutes after I replied (above) I went to connect one of my USB memory stick and it would not detect it!
After numerous tires, I though - OK let's re-boot it just in case.
Well, at reboot the system would go on the initial W7 screen asking to start window, etc. and I ws surprised - so, I have chosen to start windows and it would not start.
I them rebooted and I noticed the BSOD (very fast indeed) and agin in the same window.
I have then taken a short movie using my camera, in order to be able top read the BSOD message and to my astonishment it is not complete (probably because windows stops faster than usual).
The message reads: a problem has been detected. Windows has been shutdown to prevent your comp ... and it stops there!
I also used the Acronis Boot disks - same results - on the Acronis disks I also have Disk Director and on running it I got an ERROR - no HDD detected!
So, I did the usual chkdsk - no results - I then swapped the cloned 'new' HDD with the 'temporary' older one with W7 32bit and the HDD is happily detected - not even a blip - straight away.
I then run chkdsk using Disk Director from the desktop (which probably is Windows' chkdsk, disguised as Acronis) and shutdown and re-swapped back.
No results.
On checking the disk, no bad sectors found - so, in theory is mechanically ok.
But, at the 4/5 part of the chkdsk [if I remember well], between 23% and 25% it lasted about 2 hours - very slow indeed - it did that 2% in 2 hours.
Bad HDD and not detected as bad?
What has happened? Any idea?
M
PS I am now at work and working on other people's computers and I only have one computer 'semi' available to do HDD checks [using other programmes] and my own HDD cannot fit in yet! SO, I am now still stuck with no running computer - the most used one]

My next step would be to use the disk manufacturer utility and have it check the disk condition.

Hi
I am now running the Seagate SeaTools as Toshiba (my drive) does not firnish any diagnostic tools - they prefer customer to return them wit ha 3 years guarantee!
I am checking it out and if faulty, I will replace it with a Samsung 1Tb 32Mb buffer 7200rpm - much faster.
Current is 5400rpm, 8Mb 500Gb - MK5065GSX [ which is a substitute to the MK5055GSX I have in my Laptop]

Hi
I run SeaTools in DOS via boot disc and did not find anything wrong using the Long Run - about 2-4 hours.
I rebooted and guess? It did this time!
It may have possibly repaired the boot sequence.

I have to say up to Acronis 2010 and under W7 32bit cloning was still working fine without fitting the new HDD into the laptop and starting True Image from the desktop too (the one to be cloned into).
On Windows 7 64bit the problems start.
I never had a problem with cloning running the programme from the desktop [!] - except possibly once when I had to start to use the rescue disk until I upgraded to 2010 and went back to running from the desktop.
Is it really something to do with Microsoft or Acronis needs to be tweaked (by Acronis) to avoid problems on 64bit? or both?
Just curious.

I have been trying to login here for about 1 hour only to find my login is OK - I use steganos - Acronis server glitc?!
Anyway, logged in now.
The saga:
1. today I used a new HDD 500Gb - the same as the cloned one above
2. installed new 'virgin' HDD in laptop and the HDD source to clone from in external USB box
3. started laptop using rescue disks
4. started the cloning - both HDD detected fine
5. at the 4/5 point I wait about 3 minutes only to be greeted by the FAILURE TO CLONE
6. free space is 35% !
What is going on?
The New HDD is the same as the other one and works fine, everything works but True Image 2011!
I am getting frustrated and adirated now as I am wasting my working time too much now.
A spot of anger is coming out.
Do I have to change supplier? [Paragon as one example?]
Anyone know if there are CLONING problems with Paragon for W7 64bit?
I cannot keep wasting my time this way.
Thanks
M
[ANY WORKAROUNDS ACRONIS?]

Your source disk could have a bunch of bad sectors. If it has not been checked for errors, then I would check it also. The quality of either disk could be a cause for failure. I recently performed a manual option clone from a 750 to 750. It was Win7-64 bit using 2011-6696.
Yes, you do have an alternative. You can take a disk option backup which is a backup of everything (all partitions) on the disk and then restore the backup onto the new drive. If there should be a problem with the new disk as well, then this option will fail until the faults are corrected.
Your procedures are correct.
Target in its intended boot position.
Boot from the REscue CD and perform the procedures.
Afterwards, shutdown and disconnect source so first boot after procedures only contains the new restored or cloned disk.

Hi
Thank you for your input.
How do I do the Disk Option Backup of everything (all partitions) as you says?
If there is a URL, please let me know - thanks.
Sorry to be prtulant, but I am the customer and I purchased these programmes for peace of mind and not for ruining my working days and my personal life so I explain what simple 'no expert' tests I have done:
1. taken a New Virgin 500Gb HDD [a new one]
2. taken the 'other' New HDD 500Gb (the one that was cloned into from a 160Gb HDD)
3. could not clone them using True Image 2011 on the same laptop - enough free space (35%) and the virgin one was fit in the laptop
4. Idea! I went to one of my PCs which as windows XP Pro [I will not upgrade it!] and temporarely installe Acronis True Image 2009 - not 2010 or 2011
5. connected both the 500Gb HDD - same type - using 2 external SATA-USB boxes on the same external USB Hub [I know very slow!]
6. started the cloning from 'Desktop' - no disc and it did take 14-16 hours, but it has done it fine and no errors
7. I have installed the cloned HDD on my Laptop and upon starting windows it suggested to do a chkdsk and it canme out a 1 to 3 steps only and not the full 5 - denoting the disk was fine!
After that the HDD started toi work fine - I am typing this email with it working.
Then I did:
1. taken the new HDD I used to clone 'from' and the other older one 500Gb HDD with W7 32bit and installed them both on a SATA-USB box
2. connected them to the laptop using the standard USB ports
3. restarted Laptop using the Acronis True Image 2009 [not 2010 or 2011] and started a clone
4. the cloning started fine with no error, so I stopped it as I needed the laptop for work
Next I used the PC as before in the same way and started cloning the drives I just tried to clone on the laptop using the 2009 disc and it is going fine!
I believe the problem the 2010 and 2011 versions have and I only found it on Window 7 64bit is from the internal HDD to the external USB one - either way.
When I have the time I will try anc check the Laptop BIOS and see if that is influencing the cloning, that is all I can think of.
I am a fan of Acronis [or I was], but I am getting fed up now.
As mentioned I checked the drives for faults and they are OK - not a pip!
At this point I do not understand what is going on!
Can you explain it?
Let me know if you cannot help and I will request full refund for both the 2010 and 2011 upgrades, as I have no use if they do not work.
Thank you for listening and if anybody has any input - thanks and sorry for any mistaKs!
M
PS by the way, when I purchased the 2011 upgrade I was supposed to get FREE 30 days support and I only received an email about 3/4 days after and nothing else after. Maybe you meant 90days?
***Every time I clone I always chkdsk any disk and defragment it *** I may not be a programmer, but I have a good logic mind that helped me to learn a great deal in a 'practical way' and in several sectors and I have been 'playing' with computers hardware and software since their dawn! I even started to build the old processor kit from the old McGraw Hill books in the late seventies as a young lad and starting seriously from the old Spectrum and so on and also some Linux too, but I never had the time to really learn properly and now regret it ! I also been able to recover 'nearly' dead HDD and get files out and that is why I deviated my work onto computers and save people's lives in it! Sorry for my short Life Story, it was needed.

Hi
For what I gather 'Cloning on 2010 and 2011 versions is dead!'
I will try the Disk and Partition Backup when I have the time and use the Switch to Partion mode ' switch' and see what happens.
If I was you, I would get rid of the Cloning part of it and keep making the Disk and Partitions Backup better and better.
We will see how it goes.
I am reading your User Manual Pdf file - interesting, by scheduling it in a 'bootable' way when you have a external USB drive connected it becomes like a RAID configuration really!
I keep reading and it is getting interesting and if True Image does what it says it does without hearthache, well cloning is dead on arrival and you have overcome the cloning problems!
Why not change the name to True Copy? or True Backup Home ?
mmm
M
PS looking forward to try it tomorrow night I will let the Laptop go while sleeping and see what happens !

Creating a new disk via the cloning method or the restore method is possible in the 2009-2010-2011 versions. In certain situations, either method may work better. As long as you have a good backup, the cloning method can be used. Within the past few days, I have successfully created a bootable working disk using both methods in a Window 7 64 bit system.
The preferred method for many of us is to boot from the TI Rescue CD and perform either the clone or the disk restore or the Partition Restore with resize. Using the CD takes Windows out of the process so less interference.
The two links below are when performing a backup or restore using the CD.

The two attachments below illustrate using performing the backup or restore from within Windows. I will perform backups from within Windows but I will not perform partition or disk restores when working inside Windows

Thanks for the inputs - appreciated.
I will probably use the 2009 boot disk if cloning and the 2011 disk if Backing up the whole disk.

Hi
I was trying to do the Disk Backup today I was off-work and I had problems again!
I started TI 2011 and I clicked on Disk and Partions Backup link.
Clicked on 'Switch to Disk Mode' [top right]
Ticked [already ticked by Acronis] the Source hdd (the internal HDD)
Chosen the destination disk that acronis had already chosen - the external USB HDD - same size [Simple and Basic] and formatted
I cannot tick on the Make this media bootable !
What do I do?
Earlier, with no results too, I had the [same] external HDD but it was already a clone of the internal HDD (the one I only been able to make using Acronis 2009 on a XP Pc! ) and when choosing the destination HDD - Acronis told me there was data in it and also the Bootable option greyed - I did not go on and I hope Acronis will ask to 'erase' the destination disk or it would be ridiculous.
To be sure I dleted partitions and 'quick formatted' the external destination HDD hoping to solve the Bootable option problems.
I did not.
M
PS another wasted day off trying to do what the programme was supposed to do 'EASILY' !

Pincopallino:
The option "Make this media bootable" is not intended to be used with hard disks. This is an option intended for DVDs or CDs. If you insert a DVD or CD and choose it as a destination for your backup then you will be able to check off the "Make this media bootable" option.
The purpose of this option is to allow you to make a DVD that contains the Acronis recovery environment AND your backup, all on one media. So if you backed up to DVD, you would be able to boot from that DVD into the recovery environment, where you would be able to restore your backup that is stored on the same DVD.

You are right and I am an idiot.
That is what happens when you work on more than one laptop at any one time!
I will now start the backup and then go back to work on the other laptop.
Thanks
M
PS I have been having problems with a few programmes not wanting to work from w7 32 to 64 bit (adobe's is one!) and the scanner using XP drivers - HP will not bother to renew them - of course! Tomorrow I will try it on this laptop I am working on using Ubuntu! Everything works and i will try the scanner - never used - still new. Since w7 is Home premium and you should spend £ 100 more to professional to use the Virtual XP machine - which does not guarantee anything and give false hopes for XP drivers - I decided to try Ubuntu, very similar to last version of Mac Book = Unix
