After an ACRONIS 2013 backup, full capacity of new HD not recognised.

Thread needs solution

I replaced a "dodgy" WD SATA 160GB HD with a new WD SATA 320 GB HD and recreated a mirror image of the old HD on the new HD with Acronis 2013.

Everything worked fine except only 149 GB of the new drive is recognised. Is this a function of the BIOS of the computer (Dell Vostro 1310) or have I caused the problem when I made the backup of the original HD?

I should add that it isn't very important as I don't need anything like 160 GB for my needs but I am curious to know why this would be.

Thank you, in advance, for any help.

What does Windows say the total drive size is (using Disk Management, not Explorer)?

It might be that you just didn't expand the image to fill the new size drive.

Thank you for your reply, Colin. I did as you suggested, after checking how to on the 'net, and it looks like I have 298 GB on Disc O, of which 149 GB NTFS have been allocated to Disc C: and 149 GB are unallocated.

Did I caused it to happen when I created my Acronis Backup or when I used it with the new HD?

Although I don't need to do it, can I reassign the unallocated partition to C: at this stage? That is, how do I expand the image to fill the new size drive and when should I have done it?

You will have gathered that I'm not computer literate and I find as programs evolve they become less and less user-friendly for people like me who just want to do a basic function. It isn't just Acronis, of course, all programs seem to go the same way; Excel, Word etc. It would be nice if within a program there was a "stripped-down" option for we "oldies".

Thank you again for your help.

Les,

If you are using Windows 7 or 8 you can use Windows Disk Management to 'extend the volume', if using XP you will need to download something like Partition Manager or purchase something like Acronis Disk Director.

Using Disk Manager (right click My Computer -> Select Manage -> Click on Disk Management), right click on the (probably) 'C' partition and select 'extend', follow the instructions that pop up. If using Disk Director - right click on the partition and select 'resize' and drag the slider all the way to the right. Not usre about Partition Manager, I haven't used it in a long time.

Before doing this, make another complete disk image if the old one is now out of date or you have deleted it.

Note - in the screenshot below mine is grayed out - this is because all my partitions are at full size, yours will be selectable.

Colin.

Of course, I'm still using Windows XP, damn it, so the procedure requires a bit of extra work. However, I shall download Partition Manager as a learning exercise; after I've made another disk image, that is, and I've copied your instructions in case I decide to install Windows 7.

Thank you, again, I appreciate your help.

No panic Les, I made an error with my comment about XP - you can use Windows Disk Management in exactly the same way as W7/8, my mistake.

Colin,

Panic, for me, is second nature where computers are concerned.

I followed your instructions about using Disk Manager and when I right click on the 'C' partition the options in the drop-down box are:
Open,
Explore,
Mark Partition Active (greyed out),
Change drive letters and Paths...,
Format... (greyed out),
Delete Partition... (greyed out)
Properties,
Help.

No mention of "Extend Volume" so either I'm not doing it correctly or your mistake is not a mistake after all.

Les

I'm not doing well today :( .

Definitive answer!!

OK, basically you are back to needing either Partition Magic (free download) or Acronis Disk Director or similar. There is one other option which is to recover your imaeg again, selecting the expand image to complete partition option.

I had forgotten that XP has a Disk Management panel, but then also forgot that the difference between it and Vista/W7/8 version is the number of actions you can do.

I blame it on being a Monday morning - sorry for the mix up.

No need to apologise, Colin.

I thought I might try to recover the image again but I just have one last question. Is the "expand image to complete partition" option selected when the image is being created with my old disc, or is selected during the recover phase of the operation with the new disc? Either way is fine by me, I'd just like to know if I have to start the whole exercise from the beginning.

Thank you again, Colin, you really have been a great help.

Les

Les,

It is during the recovery you have that option.

I'm not at home, so don't have a PC with 2013 on, Grover's Guides (link in left margin) might have a picture of the expand option.

This picture from the 2013 webhelp might be of assistance http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ATIH2013/index.html#13902…, you would need to click on where it says 'settings of C:', depending on how your system is set up you may or may not see other partitions listed as well.

You just need to extend 'C'
