ATH2010 backs up entire disk rather than just selected files

Thread needs solution

As can be seen from the first screenshot, only certain folders / subfolders of the drive were selceted for the backup task, but as the second screenshot shows, the backup has resulted in a huge 7+ GB file that contains (almost?) the entire harddrive, most notably folders that were clearly not selected.

Please not in screenshot 1 that some subfolder recur in several place, i.e. both German and English names for the same folders are shown and certain files I want to back up (e.g. application data) show up in several places, sometimes recursively.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Phillipp,

What do you see if you either mount the image or explorer it with Windows Explorer or any other file manager?

Thanks for your reply, bodgy.

I see pretty much the same as when I open the .tib file in True Image. As this screenshot shows, the entire "Windows" folder tree was backed up, even though I had only selected three single files in the main Windows folder...

Are you using the German or English version of TI - which build?

I've discovered the problem underlying this. Vista, for backward compatibility and not to confuse users of former Windows versions, uses so-called "junction points". These are shortcuts replacing important folders of older windows versions with links to the folders where these critical files have been moved under Vista. E.g. my root folder contains a shortcut "Documents and settings" pointing to the new "Users" folder under Vista.

However, True Image Home 2010 does not seem to filter these junction points in any way and displays them as real folders in the selection dialog for file backups. IMO THIS IS A SERIOUS BUG AND NEEDS TO BE FIXED! The results can be twofold, with very serious consequences:
1) When you select the junction point rather than the real file location under Vista, you get an empty .tib file of 512 byte size. No restore of your files is possible, but True Image behaves as if everything worked fine - there is no error message.
2) Through some other bug, it may happen that True Image decides to back up the entire hard drive rather than only the selected files, resulting in a huge .tib file and an unnecessarily long backup process (see screenshots in my first post above). My guess is that this happens because some junction points point to other junction points resulting in an endless list of files.

I had to resolve this by checking what the real locations of the files are under Vista and then selecting only those in the True Image dialog, while decidedly leaving out all junction points that True Image offered for selection.

I hope this will be fixed as it will baffle any inexperienced users.

Interesting, I must check it out with W7 as that also uses junction points.

Hmm, obviously I've done something strange - all I get is the folder list - though My documents as a folder does appear twice in TI but not in the image. I'll try again.
