ATI 2009 caused Vista Explorer to drop removable drives

Thread needs solution

I installed ATI 2009 version 9796(I think so, it downloaded the newest build during installation) on my new Vista Home Premium.  It makes backups fine, have not tried restore yet.  But the removable media in Windows Explorer disappeared and none of the slots were functioning.

The only way to get a flash memory slot to work was to boot the system with the card plugged in.  The rest of the slots were still invisible and non functioning.  I spent days trying to figure out what the problem was, and finally found a lone post in a forum where someone had the same problem and fixed it by removing Acronis.  So I did, and voila, there were my drives in the list, all hot and ready for action.

  1. Anyone know how to cure this problem?
  2. I will read the manual, but in the meantime, can I just do my backups and restores using the ATI CD?
  3. Assuming that is possible, I would need to make a copy of it with the newest build, is that possible?

Thanks,

Rusty

Build 9,796 seems to have quite a few bugs in it.

  1. You might contact Acronis Support and request a copy of build 9,709. This build seems to be working better in quite a few cases.
  2. You can do you backups and restores using the TI CD. In fact, if you haven't, you should do this anyway just to test that it works properly.
  3. You can create a new TI CD with TI or you can download the ISO file from your Acronis account and burn it using any ISO capable burning program.

I don't know about the cure for the problem, but, yes, you can do all your Backups and Restores using the bootable CD.  If your build is 9796 then you have the latest and the CD you make from it will therefore be the latest.

I have a 9709 recovery manager CD  I made with XP.   I  booted it and tried to run a backup of my system drive to be placed on my external USB drive.  It was running fine when I left to go to the grocery store, but when I got back it was hung with 16 seconds left on task 2 of 3 - creating partition image.

Would that be because I created the CD with XP?  I didn't think so, but if it's a problem, I can install ATI again, make a new recovery CD and uninstall it.  I don't care if I have the program installed permanently or not, because all I use it for is My Computer backups.

Any other ideas on what might have hung it?

Thanks for the replies everybody.

Rusty

For the CD version, have you tried the quiet acpi=off noapic option detailed in Section II of the Read Before You Post thread?

There shouldn't be a problem because the CD was created using XP.

Did you try to Validate the image? If so, was it successful? There have been cases of TI hanging at the end of a backup, but the file itself is finished and valid.

There was no image, I don't think it even got that far.  I'll try it again tonight.  I'll also try reading about the  quiet acpi=off noapic.  There is a lot to know about Acronis isn't there.

Okay, Mudcrab, I got it to work.  I modified the command like you suggested, but I think the problem with the first try was me.  I thought it was hung at 16 seconds, but I was a little more observant the next time.  The progress bar was creeping 2 pixels every minute or so, so I just went to bed.

This morning it was hung at the reboot screen but I wasn't too worried about that.  I rebooted ATI and stepped through the restore process and it got all the way to the Summary and the Proceed button.  I was told over at Wilders a few months ago that that was as good as a validation.  Do you agree with that?  I will try a real validation later when the computer isn't busy.

Whenever the next build comes out, I will try installing it again and see if that problem with the 'disabled removable drives' has been resolved.  I'm guessing the tech people know about that.

Thanks for your help,

It's not uncommon for the time estimate and progress bar to be way off.

I think maybe you misunderstood. Stepping through the restore wizard is a good test to make sure that TI can see your drives and find and access the image file successfully. It is not a substitute for a real validation.

Definately do this. If the image can't be validated successfuly, there's not much chance of it being read properly if you need to restore it.

If you did it from within Windows, be sure to do it using the bootable CD as that is what you will have to use in the event of a hard drive failure to restore the Image.

I did validate from the CD build 9709, which I made on my XP machine back in May.  I do not have ATI installed in Windows because 9796 causes my removable meda(SD cards, CF, etc.) to become non-functional).  See my first post for an explanation.  I would rather have it installed, but I'll wait for the next build or Win7, whichever comes first.

But I think I am good to go for now.

Hello Rusty,

Thank you for your response.

[quota]ATI caused all of my removable media to disappear from Vista's Computer view in Windows Explorer.[/quota]

What is the build number of your product? You can check it navigating mouse cursor to upper line of the program then press ALT + left mouse button -> Help -> About.

The issue you have experienced is related to an outdated build of Acronis True Image Home 2009. Please download and install the latest build #9769 of the program, the issue should disappear.

You can learn more on how to download the latest build here

Thank you.

Oleg, If you will see my first post, I am using build #9796.  Are you saying I need to roll back to #9769?

As Mudcrab suggested, I'm thinking maybe #9709 will work if you can get me a copy of that build.  Is that possible?

Thanks for your reply,

Rusty

Hello Rusty,

Sorry for the confusion, the latest build of a program is #9796, but there are several common issues with it. That's why Mudcrab  suggested you to roll back to 9709 build.

I've sent you link to download this build via PM, please completely reinstall the program (it's recommended to remove current version from your PC first) and let us know the results in this thread.

We are looking forward to hearing back from you at your earliest convenience.

Thank you.

I did a clean install of 9709 and everything looks right.  I successfully validated my latest full system backup.  And I can still see all of my removable media in windows explorer too, which was where the trouble all started with me.

Thanks, Alexander, I appreciate your help.
