ATI 6514 Install Error

Thread needs solution

Hi,

Have:
ATI 5551 Plus Pack
WIN7 Pro 32-bit
NAV
Trying to update to ATI 6514 Plus Pack

When I run the basic 6514 installer, it runs up to the place where it is registering modules. It then rolls back, and gives me the attached fatal error message. C:\MYSOFTWARE is the directory where I install non-system software, and where ATI 5551 Plus Pack is installed. I have tried the usual reboots, disabled antivirus, etc. Any suggestions before I go to customer support?

Have you tried right-clicking on the installer and running as "Administrator"?

If James' solution doesn't work for you, try extracting the MSI installer by running the normal True Image installer until you get the install menu splash screen. Right click on install and select the extract option. Run the extracted installer as Administrator as per James' post.

Also, uninstall the 5551 Plus Pack before attemtping to install build 6514.

I ran the install before from an Administrator account, but reran it using "Run as Administrator" as suggested. Same message. Removed the old Plus Pack, rebooted, and ran the MSI file as suggested, again "Run as Administrator." Same message. While I was at it, I tried safe mode. Same message. When I reinstalled the 5551 Plus Pack, of course it offered to install the 6514 version, but I declined expecting that would be a mess. :)

I finally had time to fully uninstall both 5551 PP and the basic 5551, followed by a full restart. I then tried to install version 6514, and got exactly the same message. Repeated with 5551, and again was unable to install it. Fortunately I had a full image and recovery CD, so it was easy to get back to where I started. I am out of ideas on what to try which are reasonable.

One more question. In researching answers for things related to this, I found some for slightly older versions where they got the same error message, but the program still installed, and they were able to manually register the backup_cpl_control.dll file. I can (re)register the existing 5551 dll with regsvr32, so is there a way to force the install to complete, rather than roll back when the registration fails, so that I can manually register it?

I think the best solution will be to download the Acronis Cleaner for 2013, run, making sure you've read the instructions about rebooting.

Reboot the PC and then try installing build 6514. I'm not at home at the moment so don't have the link to hand, but one of Grovers Guides (left hand menu bar of this forum) has the link. Running the cleaner will also disable any other Acronis programs you might have installed, so they will need a repair install run.

I'm unclear if you tried installing directly from the extracted MSI file, if you didn't try that, extract the MSI file from the Acronsi installer and see how that goes. There is also an MSI install log, if it isn't too large you could post that here so we could see if the problem is easy to find.

Colin and James,

Thanks for the pointer. I won't have time to disrupt things until this weekend, at the earliest, but will run the cleaner and see how that goes. I did try to MSI route, with the same problem. Will report what happens.

I give up. I removed the 5551 versions, carefully following the instructions that came with the ATHI Cleaner, including all the restarts. Afterwards, I used the installation using the extracted MSI file. Absolutely the same failure message as given in the first post. As version 5551 works "good enough," I am going to give up on this. The price in time and aggravation of reinstalling Windows just isn't worth it. My sincere thanks to those who have provided suggestions.
