ATI2014 Full / Windows 8.1 explorer.exe crash every 10 seconds

Thread needs solution

Hi all,

I have a strange issue here with ATI2014. Same version running brilliant on a windows 7 x64 since I upgraded from ATI2013.
I got now a new system with Windows 8 OEM on it. Updated the system with the latest MS patches as well as upgraded to Windows 8.1 through the APP store.
Installed ATI2014 and after a reboot, I have no Icons on my desktop and EXPLORER.EXE is crashing every 10-15 seconds. The only way to solve this is to CTRL+ALT+DELETE and reboot the system in SAFE MODE and uninstall ATI2014. After this, the system is working as expected again.
I have also installed the snapapi_setup2263.msi seen in a knowledge base article, disabled Kaspersky and ran ATI2014 setup file as administrator. Nothing helps.

Any good idea?

Many thanks in advance for a good answer.

Please provide new system brand, model number, and specs. Please include video and disk drivers information as well. This will help in trying to resolve your problem.

Hi Enchantech,

Thank you for your quick answer.

It is a HP Envy 810 Desktop model. You can find the technical specification following the link below:

Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX770 with display drivers ver. 335.23.

Let me know if you need additional informations.

Hi Enchantech,

I have also updated to the latest RST as you suggested in many other threads. Same issue as before.

I am a little short on available time at the moment, please keep in mind that I volunteer my time here on the Forum and sometimes life gets in the way.

I find somewhat confusing you list your disk driver as Microsoft yet you come back to say that you upgraded to the latest Intel RST drivers. I am going to assume you did that after the preceeding post.

From your description of the issues you have I suspect you might have a conflict between ATI and some other software on your computer. I know that for some, Roxio products sometimes cause problems. If you have any other software that is started during the boot process you are more or less inviting conflict. I would recommend that you have a look at what all is loaded when you start Windows. At that point you can try to disable any apps that are running in the background from running again at startup, reboot then reinstall ATI 2014 then, enable the apps that run on start up one at a time. This will enable you to either figure out which app is the offending one or fix your issue.

Enchantech,

I never expect to have an answer in a specific time from a user in a support forum! I would never put that pressure to you. If I did that, excuse me, it was not my intention.
You asked for the drive driver not controller. In the Device Manager, clicking on the drive, the drive driver provider is Microsoft.
Said that, I'm a t the very latest level of fixes, fw etc.

I have no Roxio installed. Solely the same Software I had already on my 'old' system with Windows 7. Nothing more or different. And the problem is, that I cannot do anything after have installed ATI. Rebooting, logging in and the explorer.exe is already crashing. I have no start menu available, nor I can do anything except to CTRL+ALT+DEL, use the task manager or reboot the system in safe mode.
I have already disabled all the apps in the Task-Manager but without success.

Googling, I was able to see people having issue with ATI and Windows 8.1. Unfortunately Acronis seems not to investigate on this.

If there is no solution, I will spend 50€ for a concurrent product which is working. That's not a big deal. I'm just wondering, that Acronis is not reacting.

Thank you for trying to support me. Much appreciated.

Enchantech,

Today morning I saw the ATI Icon in the middle of my desktop. I clicked them and ATI was working! What a wonder. I did two backups today and it seems to work without explorer.exe crashes.

What I'm not able to do now is restoring specific files and folders from a*.tib file. I don't know if this is a limitation of Windows 8.1 or what. Double click a TIB file or right click it does not open the archives to extract some files as before in Windows 7.

Somebody that knows somethings about this behaviour?

Many thanks.

I did not mean to make you think I felt pressured by you just wanted you to understand I would be absent for some time.

At any rate, you report that at least your crash problem has apparently gone away and I take it that the latest Intel drivers you referred to installing were in fact not the drive or storage drivers but controller or chipset drivers. It also appears that after having done that and a shutdown and restart of the machine your crash issues have ended. That is all good, at least some progress has been made.

As to your current problem I am not quite sure what to make of it. Are you attempting to perform the restore operation from within the ATI app? Hopefully someone else will read through this and lend some incite.

Hi Enhantech,

Thank you for your reply! Much appreciated.

The situation is as followed:
After have realized that ATI was working, I was not able to double click the archive file an open it to extract some files. The Acronis TIB Mounter Monitor was not available, so I decided to repair the ATI installation through the setup program. At the end of the successful setup routine, I revbooted my PC and again i was not able to do anything more except to invoke the Task Manager. On my desktop I have the blue circle turning for a few seconds, then a refresh of the desktop takes place. This means for me, that explorer.exe service is crashing.
I did a reboot again, and since then everything is working as expected. Opening the TIB archive is also working. I did 3-4 reboots and it always works.
Scheduled job's are also running well.

Let see if this will work for a few weeks. I will try to do a restore on another disk (just backing up files & folders) and see if this works.

Many thanks for your help and suggestions.

Cheers, Lecra
