ATIH 2011: Different Volumes for Full Backup and Inkremental Backups

Thread needs solution

Hello all,

is it possible to setup ATIH 2011 backup so that full backups and inkremental backups are saved on different volumes?

Backup scenario:
- Full backup on HD A
- Seven subsequent inkremental backups on HD B
- Full backup on HD A again
- Seven subsequent inkremental backups on HD B again
- etc.

Many thanx for your ideas/answers.

Regards,
Arif Chughtai

If A & B are different destination disks, yes this is possible, but it is a bit complicated to achieve because not automatic.
If A & B are different disks to be backed up, no it is not possible.

In other words, you can have ATI create the full backup on disk A, then you edit the backup settings to backup on B, but then you will have to edit the backup settings before the next full manually to get the new full on disk A, then edit the backup settings after the full to direct the incremental to B.

When you restore, you will have to have both A and B available.

If this convoluted manual process suits you, I highly recommend you do a full test of recovery to make sure it works as expected. For example, after a full backup, try to restore the previous incremental chain.

In particular I would test the autocleaning options. I suppose this works alright when both disks are always connected, but again test it (that is, if you use auto-cleaning).

If I were you, I woud have 2 tasks:
- task 1 runs a full backup chain on disk A,
- task 2 runs a full backup chain on disk B.
Both tasks would be running in parallel. You would alternatively disconnect disk A, or disk B. When a disk is not connected, the corresponding task would fail (not an issue in itself) if the other disk is connected since the other task would execute.

The benefits of the approach are:
- diversification of destination medium (if one backup disk fails, the other one still has a working backup),
- possible diversification of destination location (you could take one disk to the office)
- protection of backups (hard for a virus/malware to hit a disconnected disk).

Arif,

Using your suggested method,
Be aware that if a restore of an incremental would be needed, Acronis would need to access
Disk B to select the incremental
Disk A to select the full backup
Disk A to restore the full backup
Disk B to restore the incremental

So you would need both disk A and B attached at the same time during a restore.
