ATIH 2012 archive size

Thread needs solution

After moving from ATIH v11 to ATIH 2012 I'm finding that my single version archive files are massively smaller, from roughly 27GB to 17GB for the same partitions!!! I've done a test restore with 2012 which worked just fine, but is this normal? Compression was at the default level in all cases.

I'm not unhappy about this, but I am more than a bit puzzled.

My guess and it is just a guess is there is a difference in what is being included in the backup. Unless you are using the 2012 disk mode option to checkmark the disk to be backed up, it is easy to miss a partition.

Use Windows Disk Management graphical view and and print the picture of your disk. Save that for possible future use and the data on it is important to know regarding which partition is the active and the partition sequences.

Next, boot from the TI CD and begin the simulation of a restore of your backup. What you are looking for is to see if the backup displays all the same partitions as available for restore as was listed in the Windows Disk Management display.

The size of your backup should be abut 65-70% of your used space for all partitions included in the backup and the type backup that offers the best restore options is a backup which includes all partitions--including those without drive letters.

Another possibility is the 2012 exclude option is excluding some files which was included by v11.

It was the file exclusions. 2012 has default exclusions of *.tmp, *.tib, and *.~ but v11 has no default file exclusions. There is still a size difference but now only about 3%. Thanks.

Oh, and btw, 2012 is a heck of a lot quicker backing up than v11 :-)
