Backing up OS

Thread needs solution

Hi

I am trying out true image 2010 and i have some doubts regarding backing up the OS

1)when i try to back up my OS which is on C drive by back up disk or partition methods ....true image seems to back up empty space too incresing the size of back up SO can i just back the OS with out the empty space??

2)IF i just selcect the file back up and back up all the files on C drive and format my C drive and restore all the files which were on C drive ..Will my OS be restored?

3)If I just back up my system state and format my C drive and restore my system state back to C drive ..Will my OS be restored??

Pls reply as soon as possible...

#1. It is my understanding that True Image does not backup empty space unless you check Sector By Sector.

Hello all,

DwnNDrty, thanks for your help, you're absolutely right.

varshita5159 khanna, please find the answers to your questions below:

1. As DwnNDrty mentioned, Acronis True Image will back only used space of your hard drive unless you haven't force it to back up the drive using Sector-By-Sector approach. However, if there are any file system errors on the drive, True Image may act this way. In such case I may recommend you to check the drive for the errors, for example, by the means of CHKDSK utility:

- Go to the Command Prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)

- Enter the command: "chkdsk DISK: /r"

where DISK is the partition letter you need to check. Please note, that checking the C: drive may require you to reboot the machine.

2. If you'll back up only data, you won't be able to boot up the restored OS.

3. System State backup will create an archive of the boot files, registry, protected Windows files, and COM+ CLASS registration database, but not the whole OS, so you will not be able to have a bootable system after the restore.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you.

Hi Ilya

Thanks for replying I just have one more doubt..

I have created rescue cd and booted everything went fine but it doesnt recognize my pen drive....So is there any alternative for this ??? another version of bootable cd or any PE plugin so that i can build bart or ubcd ????

The BartPE plug in used to be included with the paid version but that's no longer the case. After you register the paid version it will be available as a separate download from your account along with the Safe version.

I'm surprised your pen drive isn't recognized though as 2010 build 5055 seems to recognize everything I "throw" at it, including flash drives, and even an externally connected IDE drive with an eSata converter. Try a rear usb port if you are using a front port and temporarily disconnect any other usb devices including hubs and card readers.
