Backing up an SSD Drive correctly

Thread needs solution

Hi,

When making an image of of my Vertex 3 SSD drive (windows 7 OS) using Acronis 2012.
Is there any special parameters I should use?

e.g current back up (default) is set to Incremental.
But there is FULL and Differential options.

I want a FULL one time back up of the OS as I have it now.
So would I choose FULL or leave as is?

Also would I do sector by sector or not?

Also when I started a back up (before I cancelled it) the backup process started within windows 7. I always thought that a reboot would take place and the backup would take place at DOS level to ensure all files are backed up without issues?

thanks

I would recommend that you use the recovery disk to backup and restore your system and not use the live backup function. I have used both the Linux based and Windows 7 PE recovery discs to image Kingston and Intel SSDs with no issues. If you have 2 drives in the system, write the image to the other disk. I would change the option to FULL and either create a new file or overwrite an existing backup file. You can also image to a network drive but I have not tried to image to a USB drive. I do not do sector backups and I don't have any experience in the pros vs cons of doing so but I have had zero issues in restoring my system using a non-sector backup.

I name my backups YYYY_MM_DD(_version). example 2012_01_04 or 2012_01_04_a. The naming convention is up to you.

There is generally nothing wrong with creating a live backup. I've never had any problems with any of mine. There is also nothing wrong with booting to the TI CD to create the backup -- just takes longer. Some people do both (scheduled backups plus periodic backups from the CD).

For normal backups you shouldn't need to use the sector-by-sector option.
