Backup Boot Harddrive on different computer thru USB (help)

Thread needs solution

I have TrueImage Home 2011 Full..

Sorry if this is mentioned somewhere else. I cannot find it and not sure exactly the best way to word the issue..

Basically, my computer does not allow me to backup the harddrive because the computer is having problems staying up (overheating, and software problems which is one reason for backing up).. It's a laptop harddrive with windows vista

What I tried doing, was connecting my laptop harddrive as an external drive to my desktop computer's usb (i have one of those universal plugs that let you connect different hard drives as external if you're wondering)... The desktop is windows 7 ultimate and shows the laptop harddrive as drive's I & J (instead of the C & D) .. because I already have the other drives taken of course..

THe problem is, the backup works fine (whether I backup by the drive letters, or by the actual harddrive ... but the image has the drive letters stored as I & J instead of the original C & D for that harddrive...

Is there a way to change the drive letters during the backup... or even during restore?? I tried loading the image in both the vmware and even tried booting with windows 7 as a converted vhd file .. and it doesn't boot.. just sits there..

When you restore, you will be able to change the drive letter to whatever you need, if you restore partition after partition. Alternatively, you can restore as is and, if needed, use DISKPART from the bootable windows CD to correct the partition letters.

As long as you made an all-partition disk image and you restore with the original drive letters, you will have a workable drive.

To see how this works, replace your disk in your failing laptop, plug in the disk containing the TIB backup file, boot from the CD and simulate the start of the restore.
