Backup Keeps Filling Up - True Image Home 2011
I have never been able to figure out how to get my backups to behave. I have tried different types of backups, but they never do what I want. Currently, I have a full system backup every 5 days, with incremental backups between them. After 4 times of this action the backup drive is full and True Image stops backing up until I delete some files from the drive. How can I get True Image to delete old files before the drive fills up? I want it to run automatically without me having to continually check on it.

The backup drive is 1TB. Full backups take about 222GB. Incrementals take about 2GB. There is room for 4 full backups and incrementals between them. The program just keeps going until the disk runs out of room. The delete of old chains never occurs.
Right now there are 2 full backups with 5 incrementals between them plus the first incremental of the next set of 5.

Greeting DeweyMan,
Just a quick comment on Quotas and Retention policies.
When these methods are employed, Deletion rules do not apply until a new full image or chain is completed. Then the deletion rule will apply and remove the first back up image or set.
Since deletions occurs AFTER the creation of a image or chain, you must have enough room for your retention policy or quota + 1 additional back up or chain. Once this is set correctly, your images or sets will start deleting the way they should.

But that is not happening. I will have at least four, full image chains before the drive fills up. If I had a 2TB drive I would have probably 9 full image chains and nothing would be deleted.

I looked at the program again. I am using the Version Chain Scheme. It will delete versions older than 6 months. In 6 months I would have 36 full versions and 180 incremental versions requiring a backup drive of at least 10TB. How do it get it cut down to just two full versions and associated incremental versions? I don't see any way to change that 6 months time frame.

DeweyMan,
Double check the backup scheme just to confirm the retention settings.
As you are using version 2011 we can only surmise the cause. If at any point you edited and made changes after the task was created, this could be the cause. As the existing task is not working anyway, it serves no value to continue using that tastk.
If it were me, I would stop using the existing task and start a new task pointing to a new storage foldler. I would use the example below as your example except set the 6 incs to your setting of 4 incs so your backup chain will comprise 5 files . Also change the 'store no more than 4 to your setting of 3 so you will be keeping 3 chains of 15 files. Deletion will auto begin in the new task after the 4th full.
Change the existing non-woriking task to non-scheduled and as soon as your new task has completed 1 chain of 5 files, then delete the oldes chain from the non-working task. use the program and you manually perform the deletiion of this oldest chain.
After the new task has completed its 2nd chain and backup #11 has been completed, then again, manually use the program to delete the last old backup from the task whicih is not working.
By you timing your manual deletions (using the program), that will keep you from getting the full disk error message.

The problem I have is that there is no choice about the number of chains and incrementals. The program seems to be fixed at deletion after 6 months.
All of this is really frustrating because the version of True Image I used before True Image Home 2011 worked perfectly. Everything was completely automatic, and I never came close to filling the backup drive. I have never been able to get this version to do what I think it should do no matter which backup scheme I have tried.

Dewey,
Woud you spend some more time on the backup scheme creation for your new scheme. I do believe you can match the example with your version 2011 but you must take each step exactly as illustrated. I believe you may have been missing some of the settings which enable automatic cleanup after a fixed number of chains. These instructions apply to the scheme capture example.
A. Click the down arrow in instruction 1 and it will open to multiple choices. Select the Custom scheme. Confirm that Custom is selected.
B. Click the down arrow in instruction 2 and select incremental from the multiple choice.
C. Click the option to create a full after every 5 iinc.
D. Click the Turn on Automatic cleanup button
E. Click the option to create a full after every 5 incs but decrement the 5 to 4 so the option now reads
Create a full after every 4 incremental.
F. Click the option to "store no more than 10 recent version chains.
Decrement the 10 down to 3.
G. Your setting should look EXACTLY like this example except it the illustrated 6 will be 4 and the illustrated keep 4 chains will be 3. As mentioned in previous posts, this will consume 900GB of storage space on your 1 tb disk and the automatic deletion of backups will begin on backup #16 at which time it will delete chain 1 of 5 files. These are the same instructions I providedin post #6.

Version 2011 will do what verson 2010 but it is simply different. The current version of 2014 is much much different than 2010 or 2011 versions.

Those options just aren't there. I decided to start over and deleted the program using the Acronis removal program. Then I tried to re-install and didn't get anywhere. When I click on the screen to install True Home 2011 the C drive runs continuously, until it finally stops without doing anything. Then I tried to go in by booting with the install disk. That really messed with my computer, moving shortcuts around on the desktop, and making programs like Outlook unable to start. So I used Norton 360 to make a temporary backup until I can get this problem resolved.
I am not exactly a beginner with computers and programs. I have been working with them since 1977. I am also a webmaster. This program just has me stumped. I am thinking about going back to True Image Home 2010 as I never had any problems with it. Not sure if it's compatible with Windows 7 64-bit.

Latest Status -
I bit the bullet this morning and upgraded to the 2014 version. It installed easily, and I was able to set it up exactly like I wanted. Looks like I am good to go.
Thanks for the help and suggestions for trying to get version 2011 working. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

I believe you will be happy with it but many things are different from 2010 and 2011. Suggest you start by reviewing my signature link 2-A. Even for a skilled user, I believe it can be beneficial if reviewed.
Note particularly at the end of the 2-A guide is illustrated GH examples of many of the 2014 options and functions. These examples will answer many of your questions.
My recommendations:, edits to existing task are the cause of many task problems. Set up the task and let it be. If changes needed, start a new task.
Each task to have its own storage folder and its own individual name. Good luck.

That 2A guide is really well done. Will take me a while to read through it. Thanks.
