Backup results notification alternatives - Win7 has no WinPopup/Messenger service

I really like the idea of having a note on the screen each morning confirming the success or failure of the previous nights backup. I DO NOT want to have to bring up my e-mail client to check the results.

So, I'm thinking about running a Post backup command. But I don't know how to determine the results. Checking errorlevel comes to mind but I'm not sure if TIH sets that and if the value from TIH would still be in errorlevel by the time the Post command runs.

For $14 it looks like I can get a WinPopup/Messenger replacement for Win 7. Not expensive except that I'll only use it for this single purpose.
