backup storage difficulties

Thread needs solution

I have Acronis True Image 2011

My problem is where to back up to.

The external hard drive I was using has developed a fault (I have lost all my Acronis back ups stored on it) and my desktop Windows XP has a problem recognising new USB devices, i.e. won’t detect a new external hard drive or new flash drive. I am reluctant to re-install the usb drivers or alter the registry as it may result in PC not recognising my current usb devices i.e. mouse and keyboard and scanner. I want to put this off till until autumn as we are using PC for work and the summer is a critical time for us.

In the meantime I am only able to back up to DVD or the internal hard drive (there is no facility in my PC to add a second internal hard drive). My questions are a) if my operating system fails (it is 6 years old and has failed once before), would I be able to recover the Acronis backups from the internal hard drive by putting it into a new PC as a second hard drive for storage or b) if the operating system fails and I boot the PC using the Acronis CD will the usb drives function and recognise new devices so I can attach a new external hard drive to copy my PC contents?
Many thanks

Should you have a failure of your operating system (not a hardware failure), you should be able to boot from the TI Recovery CD and restore the backup overtop your existing hard drive; or remove the old drive and install a new drive and then restore the backup onto the new disk.

Whether performing the restore onto a disk in another computer would work cannot be verified without an actual trial.

Troubleshooting usb devices. Try using different usb connectors (rear preferred), and/or different cables;
and usually if your usb device is powered up and you reboot, the reboot will cause the usb device to be seen.
