Backup strategy

Thread needs solution

Hello

I have ATI 2011. I have made a clean install of Windows 7 and I also made a full Backup (it's very big and I want only one full backup at the same time). I want only incremental backups. After 5 incremental backups the backups should be deleted and new incremental backups should be made (the initial full backup from the clean install should not be changed or deleted). The incremental backups have to base on the initial full backup of the clean install. I don't want merging of backups because I don't trust in it.

How can I achieve this?

You can't automatically. You have 3 options:
- choose a backup scheme that doesn't delete the first backup. For example, the default Version Chain does this, but you can create your own.
- copy the backup you want to keep to another,
- use chain2gen.
The downside of all these options is that you will have at least 2 full backups all the time.

Another option is to create a new partition for all your content, and make a "system" disk and partition backup only of all your partitions minus the content partition:
- the system backup will be small, and you can use a chain of incrementals with new fulls, keeping the original backup,
- you can use file backup for the content, or some other synchronization software (Syncback, Karen's Replicator, Good Sync). Pick one that can sync open files.

Do not create a chain of incrementals that is so long that you wouldn't be comfortable going back to the last full backup.

Do not use the version delete function of ATI. It doesn't work well for incrementals and differentials.

If your problem is space, you should consider buying a bigger disk. I recommend at least 2.5 times the size of a full backup at a strict minimum.
