Backup USB drive not seen by restore
I am backing up my notebook to an external USB 3.0 harddisk. The disk can be seen by the OS on either 3.0 or 2.0 port.
When I attempted to restore the system, the ATI version that boots from recovery CD does not see the backup disk drive, whichever USB port I connect it to. I am afraid I could be stuck with a brick of a disk and my data unrecoverable...
HP Pavillion dv6 notebook, Windows 7, 64 bit.
ATI Home 2012 update 2 (this is what is burned on CD), build 7119
Rosewill external HDDcase, USB VID 174C, PID 5106.
The backup file is there and verified fine. The only problem the recovery program is unable to talk to it. I even tried to reboot after reconnecting the disk to different USB ports, but all to no avail.
Do I really need paid support to resolve this, or maybe there is a common solution to this problem?

kkm.
For a test, try using a usb 2.0 cable.

The diff between a USB 1 Cable and a USB 2 cable is the shield can be missing from a USB 1 cable and still meet the USB 1 spec and other than that basically nothing different. However, one rarely came across a USB 1 cable without shielding. Other quality issues would have been more problematic. A cheap, unshielded cable can have more difficulty with USB 2 speeds than usb 1, so certainly worth trying a different cable, but don't go ought and spend a lot of money on one.
Also, if you have the time, try starting up a restore from within windows and see if that works where the bootCD fails.

At what point do you connect the USB drive to the PC? On some systems when booting from the Recovery media, I found it makes a difference based on when the USB drive is connected.

When running ati, it's better to connect usb before loading ati. For the BootCd, I'd connect before booting.
If connecting to USB 3 port, try using a USB 2 port.

The drive is connected before I boot the computer, yes.

I booted the computer with backup drive connected every time.

kkm,
Since you've followed the suggestions of the forum team, its likely that the Acronis boot media does not currently support the chipset in the Rosewell external enclosure. I would suggest opening a a support case with customer care which might lead to you getting a modified boot CD which supports your hardware.

Given the info so far, I agree that it's likely a driver issue and you'll probably have to contact support with a restoration issue. You want to see if they can give you an iso for a boot disk with a diff set of drivers.

Thanks, I found the link to open a support case for free and emailed my question. I'll post to this thread if a workable solution is found.
