Backups failing again
I must be jinxed -- I can't seem to go more than a week before ATIH dies for one reason or another. This one is very strange:

What file is locked? which other process might be using one of ATIH's internal files? And more important, what can I do to get it fixed -- I just tried backing up again and again it go that 'access to the file is denied' error. Full log is attached

Have you tried unistalling and reinstalling yet? Is ati installed for all users?

I didn't think that uninstlaling/reinstalling was a suggested exercise. Is there some "easy" way to do that? Or just uninstall via control-panel, reinstall, apply updates, and then try to remember all of my config settings to get my backup just the way I had it? [I'm not complaining, I just would like to understand what to do and what to expect]. I didn't think ATIH had "which user" install options -- there's only one user on my system [that and the administrator, of course -- this on win7/pro]- On a different slant, though, why would uninstall/reinstall affect this: one doesn't generally run into applications that require unisntall/reinstall as part of their routine.
And there are updates: (1) I rebooted my system and it ididn't help [!!] but I rebooted it *again* and it did help and then backup started working just perfectly again. But after two weeks without a problem, this morning it is back again:

It was doing an incremental, and it took just five minutes and then I get the "error occurred while opening the file". I just tried doing the backup over again and got the same error, and so I expect that my backups are now hosed until I figure out how to make the error go away.

Your issue appears to be a NAS issue or a "rights" issue but since I have no experience with a NAS, I cannot be of any help.
Your backups are running at a time when you are probably not logged which may bring the "right' issue into play.
Consolidation can be a real pain. For future backups, consider a simpler form such as just keeping x number of recent backup chains.
You might find some help in some prior discussions regard NAS. Search the forum for "NAS" without the quotes and you will get quite a few "hits". Here are a few KB articles from Acronis.

If you qualify for the 30 days support after purchase, you might try contacting support.
If past the 30 day free support, then official support would be as per the "How to get support" document along the left margin.

Thanks for the info. I don't even understand what "consolidation" is, much less what I have set that is making it happen. A few things on the rights matter: I'm always logged in, and so that's not really an issue, and the backup runs via its own service as administrator, so that shouldn't be an issue either. Also, I note that the backup *itslef* always seems to succeed -- it is, indeed, doing this 'consolidcate' after the backup has completed and verified.
I've read the section on consolidation a few times and don't quite understand it [obviously]. Space of backups isn't a big issue and I don't udnerstand what it means: I'm doing incremental with a new chain every 5, so I assume I would be doing F I I I I I F I I I I I ...etc and I have delete version chains older than 14 days. What in those settings would involve 'consolidating and what would be consolidated? It has been two weeks now so I actually have three full chains [oldest began on the 10th] comprising 18 backups. [and indeed, the second-try I did this AM was the 5th on the current chain, so next backup should be a 'full' backup' and it wouldn't have to "consolidate' against anything, so perhaps if I jusst try 'do backup now' it'll complete... I guess 'll go try that.
First, how do I turn off 'consolidation? I thought my settings were pretty vanilla [new chains after 5 incrementals, and dump chains older than 14 days]. The user's guide doesn't actually say a lot about what consolidation is or what things are consolidated and when -- it looks like it isn't something that happens automatically but I'm not sure [it sounds like it is something to convert incremental backups to being differentical backups or something, but I don't really know]. I see consolidation as one of the 'more' options associated with my backup but I don't know why there's consolidation happening on each of my daily/automatic backups.
And yes, I'm past 30 days, but I do have a trouble-report-"chit". Soon as I get a chance I guess I'll try calling in and see if they can figure out what the problem is.
Thanks! /b\

This is most likely the consolidation. Look at this as a possible replacement for your task. Set your task to do x number of iincs and keep x number of recent backup chains. In other words, in the example, change the 6 and 4 to meet your needs. Do NOT use keep x based on days or based on space, Keep x backups based on number of backups.

Here are some example of the results. this was not made for you and you can ignore the archive split as you would normally have only 1 file per backup.

Ah, I see the difference: I have "deleter version chains older than <>" set I'll switch it over right away to the 'store no more than <>" and see if that helps. THANKS!

Benie,
Do make a new task pointing to a new empty sub-folder. Here are other examples of how the storage folder looks.

Ok - yesterday I just changed the settings to the ones you suggested in the same task, and it failed again last night still trying to consolidate. SO: I'll nuke the current backup task and set up a new and give it a try. Thanks!

Thanks for the help. One scary thing: I didn't realize that when I deleted the old backup scheme it would delete all the backups too! I set up a new backup, this time with only "store no more" rather than "delete chains". And it ran but something is very odd: First thing itdid, of course, was create a full backup. that took about four hours to do the whole backup, which is about usual, except:

2 Information 2/26/2012 2:48:43 PM Operation DellBackup started manually.

It took another *five*hours* to validate a backup that only took a little under four hours to create?? That seems very strange. Anyhow, this morning at 1AM the usual incremental fired off.:
1 Information 2/27/2012 1:00:01 AM Stage Description
2 Information 2/27/2012 1:00:02 AM Operation DellBackup started by schedule.

35 Information 2/27/2012 6:08:03 AM Operation has succeeded.
The backup took about the usual length of time -- but the validate took *five*hours* again. *something* is a little screwy!! ???
