Backups using Disk Clone

Thread needs solution

I apologize, but I lost the link/reference to the thread that talks about:

Backing up ENTIRE system using the disk cloning method and multiple hard disk drives... (for a laptop)

Specifically, I just forgot which way to do the drives:

If I am BACKING UP, do I 1) leave current drive in computer and put destination/backup drive in caddy, or 2) put current/source drive in caddy and put destination/backup (aka: new/next drive) in computer/laptop.

Again, sorry to post something I KNOW is on the forums, but I can't find it.

When creating a backup, it is best that the source drive be in its normal use boot location. It does not matter where the target disk is located.

However, if doing a clone or a restore to a new disk, your best chance of success is to remove the source host disk and relocate it elsewhere such as a docking station . Then install the blank unallocated target in the same physical location and connectors as the original source disk.

Thanks Grover.... So in MY case, where I am cloning to backup, I take the current disk and put in in the dock and clone from the dock/caddy to the "new" disk in the laptop.

DISCONNECT the dock and reboot... The laptop SHOULD perform exactly as it did with the other disk.

Same thing for a "restore" really, right...? The "backup" disk is the source disk... Put in caddy; clone to laptop HDD, disconnect caddy and reboot...

Thanks again! I should do this more so I don't forget. ;)

Grover, please take a look at my new post. I have basically the same problem/question. I can't clone to a second identical internal drive. I was able to do this no problems before with my older, smaller 80gb hard drives. Worked every time and I boot tested that cloned drive often. This is with a desktop, though.
