bootable USB media does not work.

Thread needs solution

Toshiba Z830 Ultrabook with 128GB SSD. Windows 7 Professional.

I just installed ATIH 2012 (build 6131) latest. I did a SystemBackup and created a bootable USB drive. Everything seemed to go smoothly, no error reports. But I was warned on the Toshiba forums that Acronis does not work, so I tested the boot media and sure enough...

Starting Acronis Loader...
Acronis Loader fatal error, boot drive partition not found.
Press to try and boot OS

and of course that fails, and the message repeats.

Looks like a fundamental problem when the bootable USB drive was created.

Another strance thing, when I did the backup, I opted to
- edit backup settings
- multiple partition selection
and was able to see checked,
- NTFS 0.2GB of 1.5GB used ("hidden partition")
- NTFS 47.3GB of 88.1GB used. ("my C drive")

However when I browse the .tib file created, there is no sign of the 1.5GB partition.

To resolve your issue with bootable media, contact support either via Live Chat or create a support ticket. Try creating either a bootable CD or a bootable Flashdrive. If new to the 2012 version, check the 2012 Useful links section along left margin

The best type of backup to have is to use the Disk Mode option so all partitions on the disk will be included within the backup.

Zing0000,

Before you launch the wizard to create the bootable USB flash drive, launch diskpart from a command prompt, then enter:
- list disk,
- select X, where X is your USB disk,
- clean (don't select the wrong disk, the clean command deletes everythingon the disk)
- exit

Then start ATI and create the USB bootbable media again.

Thank you Pat L.

The 2GB USB memory "looked" OK and had the expected files on it. But, after cleaning as you suggested, it failed completely! Unknown size ... cannot format.

So, I used a different new USB memory, formatted it FAT and ran the wizard to create the bootable media.
This time I can boot the laptop into the USB memory and ATIH works as expected.

But this is a wake-up call for all ATIH users. The original boot media was created successfully, no warnings. ATIH created it and was not aware that it could not be subsequently used. That seems like a major failing! How many users think to test their bootable media?

Anyone can backup, but it takes a real product to restore!
