Calculating external drive

Thread needs solution

Acronis 2013 working fine for quite a while.  Lately, not so much.  Attached an external hard drive that I've used before with plenty of space, but program spends so much time "calculating" and never starts backing up before I lose patience and cancel it.  It used to take just a few minutes to do this, but now it seems like 15-20 minutes, leave the room, come back, and it's still "calculating."  Any ideas?

Hello Carol,

Backup can be stuck at "calculating" in True Image 2013 by Acronis due to 3 factors:

1) damaged program`s database, where Acronis stores most of its settings. Consider applying solution as described at post https://forum.acronis.com/forum/99525#comment-324836. Although it was posted in regard to 2016 version, it also applies to 2013 version. This "light" method of refreshing the application settings will not require reinstallation, but you will stil need to re-add and re-configure your previously created backups

2) issue at drivers level: incomplete/unsuccessful installation/update of other Acronis software, installation/update of third-party software that works with disks and file systems at low level, like Acronis, and may come into conflict. If solution 1 did not help, you can reinstall the program with help of special cleanup tool as per instructions at https://kb.acronis.com/content/34876. Please make a complete system disk image from bootable media before following intructions from that KB article, just to be on the safe side, it will allow you to revert all changes made by cleanup tool.

3) considerable backups slowdown that you have noticed sometimes is an indicator of a problem with source or target disk` file system or hardware. If you are protecting your entire disk with Windows with Acronis, you can use Windows native backup tool to do the same task and see if it succeeds. This will show whether the issue is specific to Acronis or other backup progams are unable to backup to external disk as well.

If you have already solved/workarounded the issue on your own, hopefully information above will help you if you will face the same issue in the future.
