Can I move archives to external media?

Thread needs solution

I'm not sure if it's possible to do what I want with this software can someone tell me.

I want to be able to backup files or partition to a local folder. Then I want to move those backup files onto an external drive which I'll take away and store in a safe place. I don't want to keep the backup files in my local folder but i do want incremental backups to continue.

Is it possible?

Areve,

Yes you can do what you want, but why not image directly to the external drive?

If you decide to go ahead with your original plan, I would advise you to; a) Copy the archive to the external drive rather than move so that you can; b) run a validation check on the copied archive just to make sure that no corruption has taken place, then delete the original archive.

When I move the backup to another place the next backup is a full one; am i doing something wrong?

It makes no sense for me to carry my external drive around I can just move the incremental backups (across the internet) to my external drive.

areve,

You can do this using either a file based backup or a disk/partition backup, but you must leave the last incremental backup in the folder so that Acronis will see the incremental and continue to make incrementals. (Every time a new incremental is created, you could only move the previous one off of your system.)

To be able to restore any files from your backup all of the files would have to be moved back to the original location, or you would have to delete the task, be sure all of the backup files are in one location, and add the backup version chain (set of backups) to the task list to be able to restore. You could easily confuse the Acronis database and have major problems with restores if you weren't very careful about managing the backup files.

You also can not validate the backup since all of the backup files are not together.

By moving the backup files you risk corrupting the backup files themselves. If even one of the incrementals gets damaged, all the incrementals following the damaged file will be invalid and not useable for restore. Since you would not be able to vaildate the backup, you would not know you had a problem until trying to do a restore.

Although what you are suggesting is possible, I would re-think this approach if I were you.
