Can I put a backup from a 500GB HDD onto a 240GB SSD provided that the "used data" doesn't exceed 240GB?

So, I'm getting ready to upgrade my 500GB HDD in my laptop to a 240GB SSD.

What I'm wondering is this: can I simply make a backup of my laptop's current hard drive and then when my SSD gets here, put that backup onto my SSD and everything should "just work"? Or do I need to use the "cloning" feature?

Even though my HDD is 500GB, there's only about 50GB worth of data on it right now, so that should easily fit on the 240GB SSD. I was just wondering if there were any issues that I might not be aware of, or if there's any reason this shouldn't work.

To clarify, I made a backup of the C: drive (which was around 48GB) as well as the system reserve partition (which I think is around 100MB). I backed-up the entire HDD. Also, I'm currently using True Image 2013, but I will get 2014 if it would make the process easier.

Another I had read about is putting 1mb before a partition or something to that effect -- I don't know. Is that even necessary with ATI 2013? I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a crash course on how to do this or point me in the right direction.

Luke,
A few changes.
First, you do not indicate which version of Windows.
Also, I will ASSUME that your disk is not the GPT or UEFI style systems.
If it is, then post back before proceeding with the instructions below.

Used space should be less than 200GB if you are putting the data onto a 240GB disk. The new disk needs "empty space to move around".br />
Whether cloned or restore a backup, the final result will be the same.

Click on signature link 2 below. Note the first few pictures about how to create the disk image backup. This is the type of backup I would recommend that you complete. Notice that you must click the "Switch to disk mode" in order to have the disk to be selected item.

My recommendation would be to Create a new "disk image" or "disk mode" backup and use it for the restore to create the new disk. This keeps the source disk safe as it is not attached during the restore.

The type of restore I recommend that you do is illustrated in signature link #3, item #1--restore to larger/smaller disk. This also illustrates the 1mb starting partition offset.

Open Windows Disk management console and look carefully at your 500 as it relates to which partitions are pictured first.-- Also note which partitions is marked as ACT or ACTIVE. When performing the restore, the restore will need to be in the same sequence of partitions as the old disk.

General:
1. Install the SSD inside the computer.
2. Boot from the user created TI Rescue CD.
3. Perform the Tools "Add new disk" option. This is illustrated in the guide.
4. Restore the new "disk image" backup as per link 3, item 1.
Any Windos non-lettered partitons should be restore as same size as original.
Most likely, it will be your Windows Drive C system partition which will need resizing smaller to fit the 240gb.
5. As part of the restore, do be sure and checkmark the "Recover Disk Signature" which is listed on lower left corner of the target disk selection screen. This is illustrated in the guide.
6. When complete, shutdown and disconnect the backup storage disk.
7. Reboot with only the SSD connected.
8. The system should boot but if it does not, then use the Windows Recovery or Installation CD and perform the Startup Repair option. The Windows Recovery CD is user created and the create option might be found in the Start/All programs/Maintenance folder.

If you have questions, post a screen capture of Windows Disk management graphical view of your current disk.
